Travel in the region

I'm a little confused about how one goes about traveling around the general region. I'm always reading "go to Bahrain for the weekend!" or "UAE" like doing this is super easy. What I'm wondering is: do you need an IQAMA first and, as a female, do I need permission even for short trips like this?

I do not think you would face any problem being a "single American white female".

I suggest you move in small groups rather than on your own, the only place where I see you might have a difficulty is in checking into a hotel in Saudi Arabia for which you may be required to make advanced reservation through your sponsor or employer.
