Big furniture retailers in London?

Post new topic

Hey people,
I just moved to London from Germany and am kinda used to from home that you have massive (and I mean at least the size of Ikeas!) furniture shops everywhere along the motorways (not really in the cities as they're too big I guess) where you can get medium or high priced/quality furniture (not that IKEA crap).
However, in London, it seems you either have massive ikeas or tiny furniture corner shops like Habitat and all that sort of stuff. But, I NEED MORE CHOICE than that and better quality than Ikea!

Does anyone know any big stores around London? I live in Richmond, which isn't really central I suppose, but I can drive whereever if the place warrants it....

Thank's in advance!!

Arne

PS: I know places like John Lewis have some furniture, but they're hardly specialists and only do it by the way as I understand it, so not really what I'm looking for either...

I have not seen a lot of big furniture stores here, but you could try the Conran Shop if you like that kind of stuff.  There are a few really nice furniture stores on the King's Road.  Try googling these and see if any of their styles appeal: Heal's, Lom Bok, White Company, Conran Shop...
The General Trading Company in Sloan Square sells unique items, but at a price.

There is a Dansk furniture store in Essex.  That's all I can think of at the moment.

I actually did buy some bedroom furniture at John Lewis and have been pleased with it.

Good luck!

Good luck!

You could try flea markets, or alternatively take a look at the furniture classifieds on www.gumtree.com - often you'll find good deals for furniture, esp. if it's fellow expats who are moving on and don't want to cart a container of possessions around the world with them.

Of course, the other option is to go for (what I've found to be) the uniquely UK proposition of renting a furnished apartment / house.

Have fun
