I recommend "Cho tôi xin một vé đi tuổi thơ" by Nguyễn Nhật Ánh, English name is "Give me a ticket to childhood". You can see detail here:

I am afraid that there are not many GOOD contemporary novels written by a Vietnamese available in English. However, you can find some novels being translated into English at https://www.lib.washington.edu/SouthEas … tions.html

Choose the one of your favourist. The only good one I have in hand now is "The sorrow of War" by Bao Ninh, but you dont like war-related stuffs :)

I have to agree with Virgoks. There are not many good contemporary Vietnamese novels recently and it must be harder to find good ones translated into English. However, you can try "Open the windows, eyes closes" (Vua nham mat vua mo cua so) - author: Nguyen Ngoc Thuan. You can also try to find a book written by Nguyen Ngoc Tu - I have not read her books but heard that she's a really good author and I remember several have been translated into English. Her books mainly talk about the normal/mordern life of people in countryside of Mekong Delta nowadays. Another one should give a try is the author Pham Lu An/Pham Cong Luan/Dang Nguyen Dong Vy [same author], he mainly writes about his own opinion/observation on changes of Saigon after the war, before the "open-time in 1990/1995" and recently. Not quite sure if any of his books has been translated into English but would have at least one if I remember correctly. There's also a Canadian guy named Joe Ruelle writing book in Vietnamese about daily life of Vietnam from his own opinion as a foreigner and perhaps to be translated into English but I do not recommend it because his "special thing" is to write down every Vietnamese slang from young people into his books. Otherwise, there are not many things to read. Not sure if this useful but happy reading!
