Hello Jim,
I am a local who lives in Abuja but I can give you tips on where to go in lagos.
Check out chocolate royale on inyang Etim street and silverbird gallaria...hordes of expatriates go there and at chocolate royale there's amazing food, chocolate and a club just next door. At the gallaria u can watch movies n play games. I hope this helps.

Jimmy, do you want to hang around expats only , or would you like to meet some other people. And yes, they speak English.

Hi Jimmy. There's a place called bottles that's really good for expatriates and tourists. It's supposed to be Mexican but more American if you ask me. They have a band that plays old rock and roll, some American classics and some fun country music sometimes on Wednesdays. They are re-launching on the 1st of September and are shut down till then. If u're interested let me know, so I can give you more info. Also having a happy hour mixer thing today, Friday 27th August 2010 and there will be a good mix of people including expatriates and tourists if you are interested. I will also be going for Trivia night at the US Marines quarters on Saturday; where they will have food and I'm sure some good cold beer. There's so much to do in Lagos and you shouldn't be having any problems at all!
