Okay, you know it's more than the animated gif website, right?    Check your cookies.  Unless you've blocked it, Google Analytics is in there and sites that support it (such as this one) report every page you load in your browser back to Google.

You don't care about that either?  The privacy implications of that don't bother you?

And if you think that simply not using Google will protect you from NSA snooping, think again.

What makes you think I suggested that?  I simply said a company that tracks what you search for AND THE WEBSITES YOU VISIT, catalogs the information on their servers to make money off what you do, IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.   The fact that your search and browsing history that Google stores on their servers, that's tied to you specifically, not just some random token, is then subject to a nearly unaccountable, opaque agency like the NSA raises the level of creepiness even higher.

I'm not sure why anybody would subjects themselves to that when they can simply use a search engine that doesn't track you, https://www.duckduckgo.com.

Dan, calm down please, this is only the internet.  :)  I didn't say that you suggested that I wrote: "and if you think..." etc.

So the web search site you use doesn't report back to the NSA (or even NASA, in fact). And the NSA doesn't know that and hasn't taken steps to ensure that they can snoop on you anyway?

Unlikely, my dear Watson.

I'm off to bed, don't lose any sleep!  ;)

Talking about Nasa or Vietnamese government keeping our private information, I have a great idea. We will buy a satellite and we won't feel upset about the internet connection and no one will keep our information. Just 2m$!!!!

Today I was so talkative so I decide to be talkative again to finish the day: There is a Viet girl. She usually published many secret stories about celebrities and high position governors. Viet spies captured her and they couldn't apply any rules on her. They punished her by capture her in a 2m2 dark room for 2 days. Now she becomes lunatic!!

So dont worry about Nasa.. but Viet Central Intelligence Agency

'Nasa'
You're a classic.

That's a distinction without a difference.  Your implication was that I'm arguing not using Google protects you from the NSA.  I'm arguing that not using Google protects you from Google and the NSA data grab is the icing on the cake.

They can't report what they don't have, and it's plainly verifiable that they don't install tracking cookies on your system (feel free to use them, and check).  If you think "they all do it" and throw up your arms, then you've bought into Google's lies/propaganda.

No, Macbook Air is good enough (it's what I use).  Just 1/2 a year's income. You don't need to eat, right? :D

Hmmmm, I can cook by myself, it doesn't cost too much for eating. But, when I feel sad, I spend much money for shopping to keep my smile :D. In 2 week, I lost 1/2 monthly salary for 3 dresses and 1 trousers, 1 T-shirt.
And from now, if I don't want to die, I don't dare be sad again  :o

Dan, you cant be calmer than me, because I am calmer than a tantric yogi's yoga counselor.

We aren't all paranoid and we dont "buy into things" just because we use them. If you want to really avoid snooping you need to use "spoof" ip addresses and VPN's and a whole plethora of counter measures and counter counter measures.

And if you are really, really paranoid about such things then, as I said before, you can give up currency, credit cards, passports, social security, medical insurance, debit cards, store cards, bus passes, telephones, computers etc, etc ad infinitum ad nauseum and go and live in a Faraday cage underground, grow a long shaggy beard and wash in puddles.

Problem is, they already know who you are and where you are. But they just don't care.

DanFromSF

Oy vey.

Matt, let's not let perfection be the enemy of the good.

Google places tracking cookies on users' computers.  There's code embedded into webpages (including the one you're reading now) that reports that you are reading it back to the creeps at Google.  They scan the page content and create a profile of the things they think you might be interested in, in an effort to sell you more crap.  So when you go onto the next site that uses Google Adsense, you get ads for the things you were reading about on the previous site.  That's the simple version.  The reality is it's far more complex than that.

And that's creepy.

If someone stood over your shoulder with a notebook and wrote down the URL of every web page you visited, it wouldn't take long before you told them to stop.   What makes it okay that Google does this far more aggressively, all day long, and stores that information on servers that you have no access to? (<--- rhetorical question... don't feel compelled to answer)

It has nothing to do with paranoia, or VPNs, or SSH tunnels, or Tor, or IP-spoofing, or tin-foil hats.  It's about not participating in Google's monetization of you.

Troi Oi!!

Dan, I do have someone standing behind me watching everything I do although not with a note book - she's my wife and she's Vietnamese!

If you think that its creepy having someone pre select internet ads for you based on your browsing habits, that's up to you. Personally I think that it is just part of the modern world - and you can take steps to reduce the adds you receive on your screen - or you can ignore them - whilst wearing a tin foil hat if you so desire - and on some web sites you can eliminate them altogether - it's a matter of choice.

Frankly, giving them a bit of information about my browsing habits is a small price to pay to be able to use Google Earth, Google Moon, Google maps as well as a very good search engine and so on for free

And of course you have the right and the choice to use the off button whenever you desire to escape from the prying cookies and scripts.

And it was you who brought up the spectre of your NSA in connection with this subject, not I.

So, mate, it's time to switch off your mobile phone as well as, yup they know where you are and they can follow you via your phone too.

And for something really potentially scary, look up SHODAN on your quackula search engine.

And to be honest I am much more concerned with the Wests inability to counter the threat of ISIS without killing innocent people than I am about Google.

Ok, done. Thank you, Dan.
Never care about this, but these days, some ads I visited always show in this site. It's made me feel uncomfortable. Just deleted all cookies, changed password, installed Duckduckgo and Ghostery.

Yes well you don't appear to be paranoid and with an axe to grind and you look after your security, same as I do. It isn't rocket science and the information you need to make yourself as secure as possible is there on the web if people can be bothered to look for it.
