Hi there, I'm in Hanoi at the moment and would like  to have an Ao Dai tailor made. Would be grateful if someone can direct me to a reputable local tailor who won't rip me off (non touristy prices).

I just want a simple piece and a slightly nicer, more elavourate one if I can find a nice material.

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Hi, nice to see that you like to wear ao dai :)

Out of the box but just in case you plan to visit Hue in the near future, then just be calm for now and wait until that moment. Hue is the most famous place for making ao dai and women from the both ends of Vietnam prefer to have their ao dai to be made by skillful Hue tailors.

Ask the staff at the front desk of your hotel - they usually have to buy several ao dai each year and know where to get a deal.

Just wondering. Are you looking for a Hanoi or Hue/Saigon style of Ao Dai? There used to be marked regional differences. Believe the Hanoi style was referred to as the Ao Thu Thanh. I see it on tourist dolls, artwork of the "Three Sisters", and in historical movies, but the few Ao Dais we saw in Hanoi were Central/Southern style.

Ao dai in Hanoi is the same in Saigon and Hue. Did you mean Áo tứ thân, like this:

Thanks for clarifying!! No, I just wanted a plain one usually worn by students, and looks like a Chinese qi pao but with high slits to waist level and trousers under.  They're usually made of silk or some soft material.

Ngatt, yes, that's it. Thanks for the photos.Except the version I saw had trousers.

Fickle Flower, Yes, an Ao Dai. I'm sure they know how to make those in Hanoi as well as in Saigon. Some of us are purists. The three sisters brand I mentioned is a trademark consisting of three women dressed in regional ao dais, each one slightly different from the other. Ngatt's  has the Ao Tu Than that the trademark's northern lady wears. If you are going to get an Ao Dai, why not also get an Ao Tu Than to represent the Northern women. That would give your wardrobe two nice additions.

Viet Nam, it's not just some tourist destination, it a destination with stylish flairs worthy of the world's most beautiful women. Indeed, you could also add Cham silks and a Khmer Krom Krama (scarf) to your wardrobe.

And this is "áo dài cách tân", new style for "áo dài". I like it the most, it makes me look more dynamic, youthful

So, no one seems to know of a good decent tailor at affordable (read: local) prices?

ngattt

I don't know any famous tailors in Hanoi. I never tailor any "áo dài" in Hanoi, even when I lived there, I always went to some tailors in Saigon (when I had a business trip here)

Here some tailors that some women suggested:

1. Nhà may Thiên Vân, 17 Hàng Da hoặc 256 Khâm Thiên
2. Áo dài Minh Đức, 41 Đặng Tiến Đông: https://www.facebook.com/cauvongad

Ask at any classy hotel front desk, as I said above.

They get several dresses a year and know the good tailors.

And they will be happy to help.

Or stop a stranger in the street!

Ngatt, love the Kachina Doll motif on the fabric of the first ao dai in Post #8. If the Hopi tribe has a casino, that would make a nice uniform for their dealers and croupiers.
