International Licence--can use now?

cvco, as you mentioned, your IDP has VN listed in the center pages as not a signatory, but wiill honour.  Mine does not list VN.  Another poster is in this same situation.  I was responding to him.  As I indicated, here on Phu Quoc, the police showed me an IDP which was identical to yours and said that it was ok.  They said that mine was not, as VN was not in the country list.  Hopefully this clears things up.

Dave, ok understand.

Canada may never change it position. Ok then, a solution is for you to hop across the US border the next time you can, get a licence in whatever state that is, then the grey IDP. According to Mexicans tunneling under our fences, a drivers licence is the easiest thing to get, dont even need a birth cert.

Well, here for another year+ so that is out.  I am heading to Rach Gia next week to try and get a VN licence....there are of course issues there, one being that they may have it expire at the end of my visa which is in 2 months, meaning the next time I do a visa run, I will need to go back to Rach Gia and renew the licence.  For now I have removed the center page from my IDP and printed off a replacement which lists VN.....and yes, Canada will not be changing.  This was confirmed by the lady at CAA.  She actually makes that decision and has read the Vietnamese proclamation and since they are joining the 68 protocol, this has nothing to do with Canada.

Dave, you know what you just brought up a great idea. Whats the ticket Saigon to Honolulu? Consider that trip for a visa run and get your US licence from Hawaii. Its not that far, only half way to the mainland. And they would have a AAA office too, has to be. Have to check the rules at Dept of Motor Vehicles but the theory is sound. :)

As a Canadian looks like I should get the local Vietnamese license instead of an IDP from Canada. Probably do it this Friday in HCM city.

In Bien Hoa they ask too much including a full body physical examination at the hospital. And they asked me to choose if I wanted 2 wheels or4 wheels license. I want both as my Canadian license is a full license for both cars and motorcycles.

Is this saying the licence you take is only valid in the city you get it?

Cabbie, in my state California, as I started to say before, the Mexican illegals cross the border at San Diego and there are offices set up to give them both a SS card and Dr Lic, They dont have to show anything, can even make up a new name. (moderated: no political debates here pls). So it makes sense to wonder that a Canadian newcomer to Hawaii could get a licence under the same premise. Its worth asking in an available forum what HI's rules are as to foreigners, how they are treated.

I have a grey IDP so i guess im ok, but if I didnt I would be scrambling all ways to get one instead of the VN local licence. Like Dave began, an expat has two problems, the visa run and the visa-expiry of the local licence and thats a lot of running.

Too bad most people dont know about the change of law in VN, they will get straight on the plane and not think they should have grabbed a (correct type) IDP first.
