A place like Bahar ic-Caghaq on the west side?

Hey guys,

I do not yet know where I will be working so I'm just checking my options. If I'll be working in Silema/Gzira and that area I will get an apartment in Bahar ic-Caghaq, as it's near the sea and quiet as far as I've understood.

I know however that some companies I'm interested in have their office in mdina. So if that would be the case, where would you guys suggest me looking for an apartment? It needs to be kinda like Bahar ic-Caghaq. I'm looking for peace and quiet (doesn't have to be super quiet, but you know fairly quiet), near the sea and have bus connections to mdina.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Malta is wedge shape with the west being the height of the wedge, sloping down to the north/east, where the beaches are. There are very quite places near Mdina, in fact, all of the villages (except Rabat) are small and quite but certainly not near a beach :(

Mdina itself is very quiet  ;) Everywhere is near to the sea in relative terms.

You can consider bahrija which is rural and quiet. There's also fomm ir-rih bay there which can be accessed via a rough footpath (not easy!).

Thanks! I've been looking at bahrija actually and fomm ir-rih bay seems like a pretty nice place. Probably not the best Malta has to offer, but probably not as crowded either I imagine?

Are there many apartments for rent in bahrija? I haven't been looking for a while but recall it was hard finding apartments there online.

How long of a walk would it be to get to the beaches to the north? Like 3-4 km?

There is a scale on this map if it helps. map

Wrongholebutherewego

Yea, I used it but I have nothing to measure with :P

It took me 35 mins to walk 3.5 km .. Up hill and I walk with a stick so it probably take you 20-25 mins

Try Google maps for directions it will tell you times too

I live in Mellieha.  Its an amazing place to live. Not overly touristy. However it is a bit far out from things but has good bus routes.

It's a fairly small place so it won't be all that easy to find a place to rent.

If by 'beaches to the north' you mean Mellieha Bay, Paradise Bay and Armier, forget walking as they're too far. I don't know how far fomm ir-rih bay is from the centre of Bahrija.

Check airbnb for an apartment as you can find apartments in random places being advertised direct from the landlords. We found ours through airbnb. Its much cheaper than using agents and you can read reviews from other people that have stayed in the apartments

Bahrija is really small and it always looks completely abandoned/dead. It has some really nice scenery though (a nice little freshwater stream with endemic freshwater crabs! Although some asshole poured concrete in it!! Nice sea views from the ride, Fomm ir-Rih), but personally i think it would be too quiet/isolated to live in - it's really has an end of the road feel to it. But if you owned of the massive villas up there, could be nice :)

If you want to live on the "west", near Ghajn Tuffieha, Golden Bay, etc., Mgarr could be an option. Walkable distance to the beaches in theory, but very steep hills. There are buses though.

Why would it be too far to walk? I feel like pretty much everything is within walking distance on this small island :D

Tell me more why it's amazing. It would honestly suck having to take the bus everyday to work, but maybe you can convince me that it's worth it :)

I don't think I mind the dead actually. Sure I would like a gym, a restaurant or two and place to shop food fairly nearby but I think I'm ok anyway. Calmness, a nice scenery and a nice apartment is pretty much the basics for me. I'd rather live in the dead and travel to the living than vice versa :)

But then again, Bahar ic-Caghaq seems pretty much like the perfect place so getting a job around Silema would be nice. Although I figure it wont be as calm with all the partying going on around there.

It's hard to get that perfect place ;)

The area is stunning. We live in Mellieha heights which is mostly populated with local Maltese. We have vans come down our road that sell everything meat, vegetables, fruit, bread, gas, etc so we dont need to go shopping for much stuff. We have a 4 year old son and the local school is very good.

At the moment there is not much traffic going in and out of Mellieha, however I hear that it gets busier during the summer as we are near the ferry port for Gozo.  There are a few ways to get round the traffic though, through the country lanes. We are very near the longest sandy beach in Malta Ghadira Bay.

We have been here since November and we looked at a few places around the Island but we liked Mellieha so much.

I bought a car which makes travelling around much easier and quicker.

On Google Maps, right click anywhere on the map, then choose "Measure distance".

You'll quickly change your mind once you get here. If you don't mind a 28km roundtrip walk to Mellieha bay whenever you feel like going there then walk. This is a very hilly country. I strongly recommend you get a car if you know how to drive.

28km might be a little too far, yeah, but usually I don't mind walking long distances that slope. I'm used to it :)

Yea, I might eventually get a car. I really don't like driving though, but I'll see once I've lived there a while.

Found out the company is actually located in msida, not mdina. I guess bahar is still on my map :)
