1. Learn Spanish. As much as you can before arriving. Then be prepared to not understand a word. Smile and try again.
2. Connect with other expats, either online or in person. Find a gringo hangout and talk to people. They are your best source of information in your new home.
3. Be brave but not stupid. Try new things, go new places, but keep your wits about you. Trust your gut when it says, "This isn't right."
4. Be prepared for the inevitable "culture shock". Things won't be as you expect, and they definitely will not be like "back home". It's okay. Remind yourself why you wanted to have this adventure! And if you have to, splurge and buy something imported from your home country to create warm feelings. My choice is peanut butter!
5. Remember that it's okay to fail. The point is that you try. Maybe the city or country you chose is not right for you. That's okay! Talk to friends and expats and find a new place. Maybe you just miss your home too much. That's okay too! You can always go home. Your adventure is your own. Your path may be winding, but it's YOUR path. Go for it!

Best of luck to all wanderers. :D
