My wife and 2 small kids will be arriving in the DR in early august. Trying to figure the logistics and trust issues with shipping.
Currently living in Pensacola Fl.  Moving to Santo Domingo 2 years
Who to use
Expected costs
Time of shipment door to door
Any suggestions??

What are you shipping?

planner

Can we assume entire household of goods?  Do you have or will you have residencia?

Bob K

With out your residency don't even think about it as the cost will be stupid high. Just add at least 28% fee or more (usually more) to the  assessed value of the goods.  And that is their assessed value not yours and theirs will be much higher that what reality dictates.

If it is only a 2 year move why not store you stuff back in Florida and buy what you need here?

Oh and me so bad....welcome to the forum

Charles you should also know that most or at least many rentals here come furnished'

Thanks for the quick reply. We are applying for residencia as you put it.  Its mostly kids toys that they. Cant part with, some christmas stuff minimal fruniture, kitchen appliances plates etc. we will likely sell everything we can replace but after 15 years some things have sentimental value. Just looking for a reputable company for shipping to begin our search.   From reading the blog i understand planner lives in SD

planner

Planner lived in  SD, now lives in  La Romana, but happy to help answer your questions honey.

For this kind of stuff maybe look at barrel shipping. There is another thread with that info.

Bob K

If you have at least a half of a container so ship (1/2 of a 40 foot container) you might contact Rosa del Monte. Here is their Miami number 305-884-7470.

We used them to ship a full container of stuff and we were very pleased with the price and service.

How much was the container?

Bob K

Our total shipping costs including loading and packing a full 40 foot container at our home in Tennessee, shipping to SD, taking care of container inspection, walking us through the exoneration process at the port and delivery here to our house on the north coast and unloading came to about $7,000 US

Remember that was our cost 9 years ago. I am sure it is more now

It sure is Bob!!!  First of all the ITBIS has jumped, let alone anything else....

Should clarify,  ITBIS is our value added tax, similar to a sales tax.

Bob K

Not to mention the increase in the BOHICA tax (bend over here it comes again) :D:D:D:D:D

Woe, woe, woe....  a new Dominican  sin tax: chocolate could be taxed in 2016  :sosad:

KPMG reports: "...per the amendments provided by the Law 253-12, Some previously exempted goods are now deemed taxable of the Value Added Tax. Yogurts, Butters, Toasted Coffee, Soy Oil, Peanut Oil, Sunflower Oil, Coconut Oil, Corn Oil, Margarine, Sugar, Cocoa and Chocolates are currently deemed taxable with an ITBIS of 8% upon the start of 2013, and of 11% upon the start of 2014, and finally of 16% upon the start of 2016."  http://www.kpmg.com/global/en/issuesand … ublic.aspx

So Planner do you recommend a moving company from the DR or get my own one in Toronto? Moving early in 2016

Bob K

You are probably better off getting one there who has worked with DR authorities before.

There are Dominicans operating Peralta Shipping in Toronto/Scarborough, Ontario:  http://www.peraltabroshipping.ca/ .   We have not used them as we live in Edmonton quite aways away...

Good information...thanks

What you need is a shipper from there, with experience shipping to here, and then you need a customs broker here.  Many shipping companies have one they work with, if not message me for a recommendation.
