Do I need a car? can i use public transport?

Hi,

I am moving to Muscat this summer. I was hoping to get about without a car - will a car be needed? I don't plan on doing too much travel as I will be working lots, and maybe just taking public transport when I do need to get somewhere else. Is this viable?

Hi ak299,

Own transportation is essential to lead a hassle-free life in Muscat.

Public transportation here is a totally disorganised sector, and one that is none too safe for single woman.

Come summer, (well, it is already here), walking to the taxi stands and waiting in open spaces could be unbearable.

Plus, you must also factor in the numerous unwanted offers and attention which will be given to you to offer you a 'lift' by all and sundry on the roads.

In short, it is nothing like being on your own.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I have another question if I may. I have a British Full Driving License. Do I need to re-take a test in Oman or is my driving license enough?

A  Birtish license can be easily converted to OD/L. You don't need to take any tests.
