as concerned to safety , it depends upon areas some areas are completely safe , south of iraq i.e najaf, karbala , basra also kurdish areas and some areas are semi safe like baghdad where bombings is routine matter . and northern areas are under isis control which are not safe at all.
I live in Erbil and feel very safe there. I drive myself, mostly confined to Erbil and short distances outside(I don't go further than the security checkpoints toward Kirkuk or Mosul). The streets are very safe, day and night.
