I am  "Egos" from Albania, specialised in petroleums , living in Italy. I am interesting in moving to live in Sweden (Gothenburg or Malmo) but I do not speak swedish. Can someone tell me how easy (or difficult) is to find a job in the petroleum industry there? How it is easy (or difficult) to locate with my family in the two cities mentionet above, in Sweden? Of course I accept everyone's comments relying in own experience. Please write even for different topics of what I named ,it would be useful for my plans. Thanks in advance!

Looks like You communicate very well in English. I think you can find a good job. However it is not a good idea to move with the family first. It is will be very easy on the family, if you come alone first, get a nice place to live and find a job and then move your family with in a month or two. Otherwise your family will have tough time for the month or two.
This is only my opinion.

Good Luck to you and to your family.

Best Wishes,

Hello Egos,

I can't speak to the the petroleum industry job market in Sweden.

For those not coming from a war-torn country, moving to Sweden isn't as easy as you would think it to be.

1.  You need a valid visa.  The first step is to apply for a visa from the migration office.  It can take as long as 18 months for them to process and possibly issue you a visa.
2. You need a Swedish tax ID called a personal number.  You can only get this once you have a valid visa and you are LIVING in Sweden.  Employers in Sweden will also want your personal number so that your taxes can be reported to the government.
3. You'll need a place to live.  Most private companies that rent apartments will require that you provide them a personal number and a local bank account number before they will lease an apartment to you.  In order to be placed in the queue for government housing, you will also need a personal number.  You can purchase an apartment or home if you have cash but even then it's a challenge.  Our cash offer on a townhouse was 10% higher than another party's offer but was rejected by the sellers because we were foreigners without a personal number.

So how do I get a personal number if I don't have a place in Sweden to live?  You can't.
So how do I find a place to live in Sweden without a personal number?  It's challenging and you need to be persistent and creative.  It took me 6 separate trips to Sweden from the U.S. prior to moving to finally get someone who would rent to me.

Your best bet might be to get your visa and find a job here then leverage your new employer to help smooth out the rough edges.  I hope others on the blog will respond to this thread.  I'm curious how they've overcome some of the challenges of moving to Sweden without having a support base here.

I wish you all the best of luck,

Chris

Hi Vinny!
Thank you very much for your opinion. The fact that your advice is almost the same with what I was thinking is better for me, shows that you really have the good intention to tell me the way. This give me a good filling and the hope that if I continue to communicate with you and the other guys, my neccessary information on Sweden will increase.Thank you again and please, whenever you can, write about the manners seeking a job and if it is possible to find something before moving. Brgds!
P.s. Sorry for the late reply but I was at work.

Hello Chris!
I am very grateful for the time you have spent writting me.
First I do not need a visa to come to Sweden since my country adhere in the Schengen Deal. Further, I have a long termed permit of stay in Italy which can be converted in Sweden permit of stay, according to European deals (fulfilling some conditions).
Than I would like to know if it is mandatory having a residence to generate a tax ID? I'm asking because in Italy it was not a condition.
Could I have or find a place, a house for about a month prior arriving? If yes please advise me how.
Thank you again and when you have possibility please write me even for things that for you are a daily rote. I'm looking forward to new posts.Brgds!
P.s. To say it bluntly, I was waiting some compatriote (albanian person) to write me first but you and Vinny were more than ..... in this case.Bye!

Hi Egos,

It sounds like you're over the first hurdle regarding the visa.  The next hurdle is to find housing.  You will need a residence in Sweden before you can get a personal number (Tax ID).  Forsakringskassan (government office) will mail your personal number to the address you provide.

There are many large property management companies but I found it difficult to get one to rent to me because most all of them required me to have a personal number (which you can't get until you have a place to live).  You'll likely have better luck renting from a smaller company or an individual.  Below are some links you can follow to look at housing.  If you wish to look in different cities, both blocket and kvalster will have options for you.

By the way, the norm is to give a 3 month notice when looking to vacate a residence.  The housing market is tight where demand exceeds supply.  You may be securing a place to rent 3 months prior to your arrival instead of one month prior.

Hello Cbarncastle!
Thank you for writting me. Thank you also for the 2 sites. The problem is that I can not read and speak swedish. Can you tell me if there is any local site in english? I have looked for but what I found are sites for holiday houses and with prices you can imagine. I am interesting also for local sites with job offers.
Thank you ,have a nice day!

Go in Google and look for Google Translate. Click on Google Translate. Pick Swedish and translate  English translate
you have this in English. It takes only few minutes..

Egos

I will, thank you!

Hi Egos,
To take Vinny's thought one step further, download Google Chrome and use it as your browser.

Then go to the Swedish webpage and right click your mouse or keyboard.  Select the option to translate to English and it will translate the entire page.

I don't speak or read Swedish either.  :)
