Hi,

To be able to move in Tanzania, a lot of expatriates think of buying a car, whether new or second-hand.

What are the formalities to buy a vehicle in Tanzania: car registration, insurance, etc.?

What are the relevant authorities or organizations to contact?

How long does it take and what are the associated costs?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

First, after checking the registration and insurance paper,  is to write a contract of the sale. A lawyer has to forsee everything and buyer and seller sign infront. Pay the lawyer fee. Negotiate the fee with lawyer before writing the contract. Lawyer might ask for fee based on some  % of the actual value of the car. DO NOT AGREE.

Second is to take the contract to TRA along with previous registration and insurance paper so that you can change the Registration of the car to the buyers name. You pay the transfer fee to TRA. The transfer fee depends on the amount written in the contract. You have to have a TIN number.

TRA-Tanzania Revenue Authority

Not very long. 1-3 days. Associated cost may be Lawyer fee and TRA transfer fee.
