Hello!

I am a new member to this forum and hope to become a regular. I think it is very nice to have a network of people who can share their experiences and help each other out.

I am currently a junior in college and I'm doing a semester abroad at the Beijing Language and Culture University. I really like China and I definitely want to come back next summer to work here and to improve my Chinese. Can anybody recommend some events where I can network with both local and expatriate business professionals? Before I make any moves I want to establish some connections in Beijing so I am not sending my applications into some giant database. Any help would be very much welcomed.

Thank you in advance and I look forward to making new friends.

Yud

Hello Collegeintern :) Welcome to Expat.com

Luckily Expat.com virtual community is here :):) Expat.com website is ideal for expats to socialize and make new contacts.

N.B. I have moved your discussion to the Beijing forum in order to get more responses from members in that region.

Regards,

Hi,

Welcome to Beijing.

I, as a hobby, organise networking evenings nearly every Tuesday.

2nd Tuesday of every month the theme is Career Development - Headhunter Social Networking Evening.

3rd Tuesday of every month the them is Fashion, Media, Arts and Creative Industries Social Networking Evening.

4th Tuesday of every month the them is Business, Finance and Global Mobility Social Networking Evening.

All events are attended by an even mix of English speaking foreigners and English speaking Chinese.

No membership fee. Only need to pay the entrance fee for an event that you decide to attend. Early Bird discount offers available for all events but expires 24 hours prior to start time of the event.

The events are hosted at the best hotel bars in town and are very modestly priced especially if you utilise the early bird option.

For details please feel free to contact me or visit www.fcclub.com

Thank for letting me know. Are the people who attend these events welcoming towards college students?

Manlin

The events attract a mix of ages ranging from Uni students through to older senior level people providing a platform for someone who is preparing to start on the career ladder to meet with people with many more years under their belt.

So yes you are more than welcome to join us.

What is the dress code for these events?

Manlin

The standard dress code is smart casual /office casual but for the Fashion, Media, Arts and Creative Industries we add ..."Feel free to dress to impress in a glamorous and fashionable style or, if you prefer, be creatively simple".

Please feel free to phone me 139 1109 8002.

Yes, many of the Chambers have excellent events but they tend to be limited to one specific nationality.

Having said that they also, from time to time, organise Inter-Chamber events.

SolomonL

Manlin, I'm not into business, I'm a law/politics student, so I don't think the chambers will best suit me. But with your networking events, which category would be the closest to my academic disciplines.

Manlin

All of them :D

Career Development - Headhunter theme will give you an opportunity to talk to people some of whom might be able to give you some suggestions about how to turn your Uni degree into a job/career.

Fashion - Media. All Politicians like the Media.

Business - Finance. Legal training is useful for both business and for the corporate world.

In Dec though we will not be having a Fashion Media Event. Instead we will have a "HELP...She Loves You...Tribute to the Beatles Evening" on Thurs 9 Dec and on 28 Dec we will have an "Out with the Old" Festive Charity Cocktail Party.
