Obtaining a Brazilian Passport through a stable Union

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help with the following query. I am living in Brazil currently on a VIPER visa based on a stable union. I was wondering if I would be only required to wait one year before I was able to acquire a Brazilian passport, as the case would be if I was married to a Brazilian, or if I would be required to wait the normal period of time?

Does anyone have any advise on this or have they been through this process?

James

In fact, if one is granted permanency based on "União Estável" they would need to wait 4 years before they can naturalize as a Brazilian citizen. Only then would they qualify to apply for a Brazilian passport, and the process of naturalization takes about a year to complete. So in that case the absolute minimum for you to naturalize and get the passport would be 5 years... likely more. The reduced waiting period of 1 year for applying for naturalization only applies to those legally married to a Brazilian citizen, or who have a Brazilian born child.

Cheers,
