I suppose that before to buy your friend will come and visit the area, Mae Rim is a bit far in the north, but if you like nature and don't have any kids in international school it can be ok, most of expat will live downside the airport like Hang Dong, but also Mae Hia, Suthep, after that depends also on Budget, Mae Rim will be very cheap compare to Hang Dong, the best things is to visit, drive, to see facilities, shopping, resturants, and others things you need nearby to live your life ( can be a Tesco Lotus, Big C, Home Pro, shopping Mall, airport, immigration ( near Promenada now, some services still at the previous places near airport ), Hospital or clinic, etc... you can use google map to localise all of this easily in Mae Rim by typing the condo name and check nearby shopping, school, restaurant, golf course ( there are plenty in Chiang Mai, mooban like Koolpunt Ville 9 in Hang Dong and others places )..etc...
