Bryan and Dena's Christmas gift to Expats....

How to Cope With Culture Shock

Culture shock comes at Expats from many directions, including...

New people .. differences is language, food, customs, climate .. unfamiliar garb .. and different ways of accomplishing things.

For Christmas 2015, Bryan and Dena Haines -- Canadians who lived in Ecuador from 2009-2015 -- sent their Gringos Abroad subscribers a link to www.worktheworld.com and its six ways to cope with culture shock:

1.  Stay grounded.

Know that what you're feeling is normal and most people experience it at one time or another.

2.  Home cooking.

If possible, cook some of your favorite meals from home to share with your new friends.

3.  Get active.

Exercise lifts your mood, and joining local activity groups can establish connections with your host culture.

4.  Stay connected.

Family and friends will want to keep in touch, so make time for regular webcam chats and calls.

5.  Challenge yourself.

Set yourself a goal each day of interacting with a least one new person.

6.  Find a guide.

Before you travel, use a language exchange or similar site to find someone who will help you learn the language and culture.
