Indian living in USA looking to move to Malaysia

Hello All,
I just joined the forum today and so am as new to this as it can be. First let me introduce myself. I am a 43 year old Indian doctor (radiologist) by profession have been living in USA since 2001. I live with my beautiful wife who is a home maker and a 9 year old son. My son has been diagnosed with moderate grade autism and severe ADHD. We have tried a lot of treatments for him including ABA therapy, biomedical treatment, homeopathy and ayurveda but have not seen any appreciable improvement. Out of desperation (as I am sure a parent can understand) we contacted a medical astrologer to see if any thing else can help our son and he suggested a change in place would realign his stars and may cause improvement in his health (not sure how far it is going to help). Hence out of desperation we have decided to try it. One of the places he had suggested was Malaysia and so thats how I ended up coming to this forum.
We are thinking of moving to Kuala Lumpur. We visited KL in December to look around the city. We stayed in Bukit Bintang and visited Bangsar, Brickfield and Mont Kiara. We really liked the city. It looked like a great cosmopolitan city with a good mix of all ethnicity and culture.
Before we move further, we had a few questions for which we would like help and suggestions:
1. I know that there are many options for expats, but in my case (doctor practicing in america) - is MM2H the best option?
2. I was planning to continue to work in america for atleast couple more years while my wife and son move to malaysia. In MM2H- can I do that? Even though the visa is in my name, can I still stay in America while my spouse (indian citizen) and son (american citizen) move to Malaysia?
3. If I continue to earn around 300,000 USD a year and show pay checks for that, do I need to make a preliminary deposit in malaysian bank or dont have to?
4. MM2H paperwork- Is the paperwork for applying simple enough that I can do it myself or do I need to get an agent?
Sorry for long message but am kinda lost right now and would appreciate any guidance in this regard.
Thanks
Hi Raj,
1. Yes, the MM2H is the only option for a long term stay in MY without the needing for Visa runs.
2 & 3. There is no specific restrictions on the MM2H website that you must be residing in Malaysia.
The Terms and Conditions for the MM2H can be found here. It is the official MM2H website.
http://mm2h.gov.my/index.php/en/home/pr … conditions
Each and everyone of you however will need to have a valid medical insurance for the final approval.
4. Those whom has done it themselves find it easy enough and those who haven't find it difficult.
All they need is time and lots of patience.
Hi Roy,
Thanks for your reply. It is very informative and reassuring for me as I am going through this tough phase of decision making.
As far as the paper work, I have seen the crazy administrative headaches in India when you try to do anything whereas things are more organised in USA. How would you rate malaysian bureaucracy?
If I decide to go through an agent, do you know of any good agent who does a good job at it?
Thanks again
You may contact joy-stay.com for the agent. Some of my expats friends are using them.
Ps. I am in no way affiliated nor have any business dealings with them.
Bureaucracy exists in any Government even in MY. On the scale of 1-5 (hardest to deal with), I would rate it at 3.
Hi Malaysia is light years behind in support of those on the autistic spectrum. To be honest you wont find a suitable school in malaysia.. Only a few high end international schools will even consider a student with mild learning difficulties and at far extra cost. Most avoid students that cost more basically and it hurts exam stats.
Being dosgnised as ADHD as well sounds like a bad diagnosis as behavioural issues will most likely relate to being on the autistic spectrum - often frustration. You should get another diagnosis especially if young. Diagnosis at a young age is often wrong.
Using fake (they dont work and are just created by scum bags preying on parents) "treatments" like the one you state will only make matters worse. With proper help a child with autism can have a better quality of life (depends on specifics) and those with mild autism can often learn to cope well as adults to the point no one knows. Help means a proper special needs teaching not quack treatments. No quick fix just years of steady progress.
Malaysia doesnt have this expertise (growing but weak). USA far better.
It looks like MM2H would be the only option. Example, in your banking question you CANNOT open a bank account without local employment, which sounds like something you wouldnt try for anyway. But in MM2H you would be required to deposit so that would be the only way to have an account. I think what you should do is start applying for MM2H and see what happens.
Does a person need an agent for MM2H? Why not apply directly to the government and save money?
Yes cvco but the main issue is that children find moving extremly difficult (moving house) but autistic children find moving house many times more traumatic.
Imagine the shock and horror of moving country and culture. For an autistic child this is prob the worst thing one can do. It can set a child back so much emotionally and educationally.
Raj i am not blaming you as you are lost and confused over what to do. But you need to be rationale and avoid quacks. As a learned man avoid the use of nonsense. There are no cures for autism. I know in asia especially people blame the gods etc ir karma. This is BS. It is a medical condition many have. It is just a fact and you need to accept it.
However the "medical astrolology" you consulted needs hanging by his balls. A real scum bag quack. Please get proper advice!
Thanks to Nemedot and cvco for the wise advice. It means a lot to get advice for fellow friends who mean good.
As far as my situation, though we have lived in America for 16 years now, we have always wanted to move back to India to be closer to our extended family, culture and religion. It is hard for our extended to visit us in America and we definately miss the family and particularly our aging parents. But with the way things are in India (Indian cities are getting more westernised in the wrong way than the west itself- with kids getting spoilt, very bad enviornmental and food pollution, traffic congestion) we were circumspect about moving back to India. However after visiting Malaysia in December we felt this was the perfect compromise for us as we will not be in India's craziness but 3 hours flight from it when we want to go. Also my son liked the place as he made some new friends in Bangsar when we visited in December.
As far as his schooling, I know that there is no good school system to handle autistic kids in Malaysia and so my wife has decided to home school him for a year and see how it goes. We are hoping to find some help in form of home tutoring for my son. This way he can stay in american school system for 1 more year atleast and while being physically in Malaysia we can investigate more about school options for him. All we will need is to find good therapist for my son who can work 1on 1 with him as he gets the most that way.
Does anyone know of any good therapist who handles autisitc kids with patience? Would appreciate any names and phone numbers.
Thanks a lot again.
Hi Raj,
I agree home school will be a good option. Probably will see some good result.
Malaysia is a good place . I have some Indian citizen family staying in malaysia.
Do visit me if you are in Malaysia. Probably creating a family environment for
your son.
God bless you and your family.
Hi Khalid,
Thanks for the message. It is a reassuring and heartening message for us. It again shows us, what we are hoping to find. A great environment to raise family. I have loved my 16 years in America. It is a great country which has welcomed us with open arms and we can never thank it enough for it, but one thing which I had in India which I did not find in America is that closeness among people. People in America are very busy with thier own life and also there is always an element of doubt or suspicion in people's mind about person standing next to him which was never there in India and I felt the same about Malaysia. May be because Malaysia is an asian country and we usually see more society based living in asia compared to the west. I am hoping to find that family like culture and environment in Malaysia.
Do any body know of any family with autistic children in malaysia who are ready to talk to me and give me their opinion and experience raising their kid. Would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Thanks all for answering my questions. We have started the paperwork and have contacted the ministry to know the exact procedure. I had a few more questions from tax point of view.
As I am planning to come to Malaysia on MM2H and wont be working there, do I need to pay any taxes for the money I bring from America. Do I need to file Malaysian returns every year? Will I get something like an American SSN when I am on the visa? Can I open account in a malaysian bank and transfer some money for america for daily use?
Would love guidance from some pros.
Thanks

As for coming under MM2H it is advisable to get the agent to do all paperwork.
