Hi I am trying to find some place to rent in buggiba, qwara, or st Paul's bay. Can anyone tell me what the average rental price is for a 1 or 2 bed place. Don't want to spend too much on a rental per month. Not looking for a palace, but somewhere reasonably priced, clean and modern, no horrible dark shabby places.
Also does anyone know where I can find work in this area in a hotel cleaning or waitessing that you can work directly for the hotel. I've heard lots of the hotels have cleaners through agencies.
Also keep getting conflicting advice of pay per hrs is it around 4 50 euros an hour.
Kind regards . Pauline .
Yes, the hourly pay is about correct If you get paid -)()
Cheers
Ricky
It is much more convenient for larger hotels to get their cleaning staff through agencies.
Otherwise you will have to look at smaller, boutique hotels that might hire individual cleaners. The pay will be about the same ....around 4.50 Euros/hour.
Cheers

Rent for house quiet expensive now. Probably if you coming just 2 years ago was quiet reasonably price. Now ahhhh you need just share rooms with someone else if you really thinking to living in Malta.
Specially with you wages, , Better you do to mats before coming here.
This is very expensive Country
With a very low wages.
Only luxury people, with a lot of the money to spend they can stay in Malta.
The rest of the one? ?
Living a potatoes life? ?😀
You might be living a potatoes life but we have a great life we live on one wage at the moment but we're not struggling -yeah wages are low rents can be high but the cost of living here is no where near as bad as your making out

Agree with rob. You're painting quite a gloomy picture! I have spoken to many people here that live a happy life on the island - and they are not "luxury people".
Of course, gentrification is happening I think, especially in Sliema with more luxury apartments (Tigne, Fort Cambridge, etc.) but compared to cities like London, Dublin or even Berlin it's nowhere near as bad. You can still rent somewhere decent and spacious for a fraction of the price you'd pay in most other countries
Hi thank you all for your input. I know the wages are bad, but I think it is worth ago to try and stay here for a year and see how it goes. Pauline

Rubbish!
Other than the weather, the biggest reason people move here is because it is generally cheaper than almost every northern European country. That's why so many people retire here, we have only our state pension but live a cheaper and nicer lifestyle than we did in the UK.
Housing and heating costs alone save a fortune. We used to rent in the UK and a 2 bed cottage cost us €1100 a month + €200 a month council tax, our son has to pay €2550 a month for a 3 bed semi in Germany, here in Gozo we rented a 4 bedroom farmhouse with pool for €650 and now have a 3 bed farmhouse (no pool) for €525 and no council tax!
We simply could not afford to live in the UK now that we are retired, nor would we want to.

Pros and cons just like anywhere else.
Food is definitely expensive, but I agree that there are cheaper options if you have a car/time to shop around.
Accommodation is much cheaper than most other countries although it really depends on the area.
Weather? I love winter weather in Malta. June-August? Not so much. But winters can be veeery long in Northern Europe. Interestingly I didn't mind winters in Poole (and Dorset in general) when I lived there eight years ago. So it depends on where in the UK...
Mainland Europe has cold, dark winters. Sucks.
Wages? Low for manual labor and service jobs in general. But there are a lot of people making 45k+ working 7 hour days... it depends.
Don't forget that if you're self employed or run a business you can, completely legally, pay about 7-8k a year in taxes (total including accounting fees, social, health, income tax) no matter how much you earn. Providing that you draw a modest salary to cover your living costs. Everything else can be owned by holding companies - property, boats, etc. That's a big draw to the island for many people. You can make 100k/year net and pay under 10k in taxes. Amazing.
This kind of taxation is also the main reason that prices are skyrocketing in some parts of Malta. Everything from rents to groceries to eating out. People are literally moving to Sliema, renting 2000/month penthouses and saving 50k/year on taxes... which they then spend on travel lol. I know someone who lives in Malta about six months in a year and spends the other six months travelling the world (France, Brazil, Australia, Spain...) all paid for by tax savings. It's a win-win for many people. Unfortunately not for everyone.
Mantasmo, that's very interesting what you wrote about taxes! I am self employed, too, and have been thinking about moving my business from Ireland to Malta. Might have to look into that now
After years of renting tiny rooms in tiny flats in the UK with single glazing, mould and horrible carpet, paying a huge amount of council tax or my time in Dublin struggling to find affordable, decent accommodation during a housing crisis Malta really is an absolute pleasure.
You get so much space for your money and the standard of housing is high. Compared to Germany where you pay 3 months rent commission to an agent, 1 month rent in advance and 3 months rent deposit starting out in Malta is very cheap.
Don't let a few people put you off with their story - they might not have liked it here or failed for some other reason!
I agree, Malta is a cheaper option than most of Northern Europe even with its clear downsides. Food is very expensive but the savings made in other areas out weighs this by a long shot. Weather is a definite bonus, Just look out the window, Blue sky's and sunshine at the end of January. Look out the window in the UK - Grey sky's and rain!
Malta is far from perfect, it has its frustrations with official things such as car registrations, ID cards etc but overall anyone who is thinking of making the change I say give it a go. Those that have a very negative view on malts clearly didn't apply themselves or prepare themselves for Malta properly, 2 weeks on holiday is different to living here full time. If you can accept Malta for what it is and the people with their open, sometimes too open voices then its a wonderful place to live
We spent more on food in the UK than here and do not find it expensive.

I can 100% recommend Chetcuti Cauchi Malta.

That's because food in the UK is very expensive. Not so much in Germany, Spain. Expensive in France, some parts of Italy... it varies a lot from country to country.
