Shipping a vehicle to The Dominican Republic

Heard some horror stories about the cost and bribes in regards to shipping and licensing vehicles in The DR. Cannotmove without the Harley. Any advice?

It can be a nightmare. Your best bet is to ship it with your 6 month tax exemption with a residency.  You also need a good agent on this end to help with the taxes and getting it cleard in customs.  You might want to check our the Board www.DR1.com and look under the legal section and the Moving to the DR section. You can also post the question there as well.

We shipped a car (US value $1800) with out the exemption and taxes were about $9,000USD plus about $2000 for the first lic. plates.  Total rip off.  We shipped and entire container with household goods including lots of new appliances, stoves, electronics and personal things with our exemption and paid $300 total in taxes.  So there is a big difference.  If we had room and the time to ship the car on the same container the taxes on it would have been about$2000.

Hope this helps.  WEre on the north coast are you. Are you a scuba diver as we have just started a North coast dive club.

6 months having the car registered before shipping it to the Dominican Republic is not enough to get some tax exception. The vehicle has to registered at least one year before you send it. Then the Dominican Customs can waive some part of the duties as long as the person is moving for goods into the Dominican Republic.
Stuffing your vehicle along with your personal effects or household goods in a container makes not difference.
So far the best shipping agency to ship your car from USA to the Dominican Republic will be SEA LAND CARGO  Their web site sealandcargo.com

Good look !

Actuallly the car has to be registered to you for 2 years and the car cannot be older then 5 years.  They are cracking down on this age thing and very strict about it.
Secondlly if you do ship it with your one time exemptions (with residency) you do get a signifcant tax break if not plan on about 35%-40% of the blue book value in taxes. This includes the $2000 first time registration fee here.
