Tips and advice to thrive in Ireland

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hi,

When living in a foreign country, you have to adapt to a new environment, various cultures and different social codes.

How did you manage to adjust to Ireland?

How long does it take to feel at home? Would you say it is an easy process?

According to you, what is key for a successful integration process in Ireland?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience!

The Irish people make it very easy to integrate. They are warm and welcoming. But is good to always be friendly and warm too. Don't be too bold. They are special people and very humble

Hi it was tough and still is trying at times. I am 14 years living here. It took 5 years to get use to the country and the people. I did not like it here when I arrive and I was looking for another job within 3 months of arriving here. It was wet, cold and miserable in january when I arrived. I have had to adjust my life from enjoying plenty of sunshine and outdoor activities to virtually hanging out in a gym and now my body has acclimatized (i think) i find it quite refreshing to go out well dressed for very cold weather and possible rain.
I take xtra vitamin d and I sit under a SAD light to give me artificial sunshine. I met my husband here within 6 months of landiing and thats the only reason I am still here. I would have been back in sa long ago. Not the place to be alone, single or close to retirement. To survive here you will need to love the cold and wet conditions, lots of rain. It is a big factor for most people coming from warmer countries. IF you love, walking, hiking, gyms, country life, peace and quiet and minimal people you can make it your home. If you are looking to live in dublin or one of the other cities it can be lonely unless your job is very sociable. It depends on what you enjoy and whats important to you. Just don't expect much and you won't be dissapointed.
