Hi Mummies/Dads,

I have only been in Greece for a short period and not long enough to know the usual etiquette for childrens parties. And food? In Australia we would have a themed birthday cake and/or cupcakes, little party pies, fairy bread, sandwiches and other hand held food, probably equal amounts of sweet and savoury.

We would play pass the parcel, musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey, when the music stops you freeze. We would send out party invitations to friends at school and other play mates with about 2 weeks notice and an RSVP dated say about 4 days before the party date. Ballons on the front gate to let people know the party is here, except we are in Athens we are in a unit....

We were also intending on a Pirate Party, for my son who turns 5, does any one know where you can get gold chocolate coins from?

Would love a little enlightenment on the subject.

Thank you,

Nadine

Dear Nadine, when I first started having birthday parties for my children in Greece. I was told that Greek children just wanted to be given food and left to play independently. Being English and used to the themed, well organised children's parties you have described, I just went ahead and prepared the party games I would have, had I been in England. The Greek children loved the parties. So I would say just go ahead and plan your party as you would have done in Australia.

I would say you may need to explain you games clearly and in Greek.
Also I never recieved an RSPV so I always just asked the parents if the children were coming. I also quickly learnt to give the invitations just a few days before the party as this seemed to be more accepted.

You can usually buy chocolate coins at lidl as soon as they have their Easter chocolate in stock.

Hope your son has a fabulous birthday!

Hi Georgina,

You are very kind! I was beginning to think I had asked a really silly question. My husband is Greek however we had our child in Australia, and he knows nothing about raising a child in Greece! so we collectively where drawing blanks. We don't know the other parents in child care, so we are simply going to give the invitations to the teacher, cross our fingers and hope for the best!

Thank you for clearing a few unknowns for me.
