where to live in Rio ? how much ?

Post new topic

I am supposedly likely to move to Rio in some months, and already need to plan more or less where I want to live.  I am used to a good living standard and good neighbourhoods, but at the same time I don't like commuting.  But I guess I can't get the best of both worlds, so I'll have to make a choice.

I will apparently be working in Av. Marechal Floriano, which appears to be in the centre of the city.  So I suppose I have two options:
* Live in the centre as close as possible to the office -- walking distance
* Live in Ipanema or Leblon and just commute -- 20 to 30 min by taxi ?

Any suggestions, ideas ?  Pros and cons ?

Also, my remaining salary to live in Rio (after paying for expenses elsewhere and savings, taxes etc) will only be about $ 5,000 to live alone -- though the office pays 33% of my rent and I have insurance etc.  Is it possible to live comfortably with that in those locations ?  Like having a two to three bedroom nice apartment, eat out frequently, take taxis etc ?

I am bit worried also about social life in Rio.  How easy is it to socialize and make friends ?  I do speak fair Portuguese.

Hi Rolando78,

If your budget is $5000 USD per month then that should be enough to live in a decent place and cover all living expenses.  If it's R$5000 BRL, then I'd say you would need to live in a different area other than Leblon or Ipanema.  Not sure what the prices are like in the city centre.  From my experience the city centre seems a little sketchy, however the area does seem to have been improved since the Olympics, and they have really cleaned up the old dock area near 'Museao de amanhar'.

Hi,
You can find a good apartment in Glória district or Catete district which will give you very easy access to your job place. You can go to your job easily by subway if you live in Glória, Catete or Flamengo district. Look for an apartment at Airbnb website.
It is very easy to socialize with brazilian people.

Hello,
I'm moving to Rio de Janeiro soon (actually, until the end of January).
I'll be working for a tourism company and also plan on teaching English.

I'm looking for one or two roommates to share a flat as I've realized it would allow us to live in a much better place/neighborhood for much less.

I'm pretty easygoing, I can cook some Brazilian dishes (not many), I speak Portuguese fluently, I don't smoke but I don't mind smokers. Anyone interested?

Leblon and Ipanema are great places to live and of course, only blocks to the beach.  The rents in those areas are down over the last year dropping appx 10% and a fair share of vacancies. If you have a housing allowance of $5000 USD you can live very nicely. R$5,000 would still get a nice small apartment.

The great thing is the Metro Subway is open in  Leblon now and I think two more stops added in  Ipanema. Inexpensive and fast to Centro without the cars and bus competition on the surface.

I personally do not live there but I shop and dine and recreate in Leblon on a regular basis.  I would take a look at this neighborhood.
