Cheap / busy places to move in California

Hello,
Me and my boyfriend and wanting to move to California in the next few years, but are unsure on the best location. We have found a couple including places like Ventura, Santa Cruz, Venice Beach, and would prefer somewhere like this. We would like a location were we can surf, with a good nightlife, and a good industry for work. So we're looking to speak to anyone who may be familiar with anywhere like this or could give us any advice.
