I am going to Port Moresby to stay for 2 years soon. My husband will be working full time and 11 year old daughter will be at school. Let's talking about shopping in PM first. I stayed there for about 1 month 10 years ago, I only could buy very very basic things in a heavily guarded supermarket, mind you goods are very expensive there compare with Australa so this time I am going to ship 2 years surply of shampoo, toilet paper..... Never saw a shopping center, I would not dare to visit even they had one. My life was called "compound" life there. Inside compound, life is lovely, swimming pool, tennis court, gym..., outside is another world which I choose to take no interest in.
Shopping is zero in term of fashion unless you call what local people wear is fashionable. I would order 100% of my stuff from online to delivery to my private bag in australia. In port Moresby fashion was not that important, to me it seemed tea port and dinner wear are much more noticeable than what you wear. I invested a Wedgwood tea set and dinner set this time and can't wait to have endless morning teas with others as that is what they do there.
