Naturalisation and citizenship in Chile

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everyone,

What are the requirements for acquiring citizenship in Chile? For example, length of residence, language requirements, employment etc..

What formalities are involved in the process?

What is the policy on dual-citizenship in Chile? Do you have to give up your former nationality?

What are the advantages and benefits of acquiring Chilean citizenship, in your opinion?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

After nearly six years of living in Concepcion, Chile I applied for my permanent residency (permanencia definitiva) only to be rejected after waiting almost seven months for a reply. I was granted a temporary visa for another year but they stuck me with a fee of $312,000 pesos (about $460 dollars American) for the privilege.  I never had to pay more than $35 dollars American to renew my visa for the past five years.  Is this something new in that they have raised the fee so tremendously?  Has anyone else out there had the same experience as I have? It is really going to hurt my limited finances as a pensioned retiree to have to fork over this amount of cash.
