As we start looking at property in Las Terrenas, we've noticed that majority are in gated "residences". I've also read that much of the theft from homes is attributed to the security guards who see you coming and going and know when your home is empty.

Do these communities make homes more secure or less?

Is it possible to crime statistics in detail for the different communities or will we just need to ask the other home owners?
