Residence permit in Spain

My son is studying in Malaga and having residence permit which will expire on 20-June-17, he apply for renewal and expected to get after one month. He has pass from his College which is valid till December-17. Can he travel before getting residence permit and enter again with the documents he have ( papers for renewal of residence, College passand all others). We are Bangladeshi.

I had a similar problem. I am awaiting my NIE which should arrive in the next few days. I had planned a trip to Morrocco with my daughter but we changed plans to travel within Spain. I asked in immigration and I believe that one can obtain a letter from the police to reenter but no one was able to give me details. I do not believe that the letter that states renewel in progress is sufficient.
