New to Roden/Groningen

Hi there!

I might be moving to Roden soon and I've heard loads about Groningen but not much of Roden. Is it easy to get to Groningen by public transport and also how long does this take? Will someone who can only speak English get along in Groningen? I will be living in Roden and won't have a problem with Dutch at all but my boyfriend will be living in the city and can only speak english.

Is Roden fairly safe to live in? any interesting places or info would greatly be appreciated!!

Christine

Hi, i actually worked in Roden as a nurse for a few yrs...cute little town about 15kms from Groningen....very safe...great public transport to gron. No one speaks english in Roden, but Groningen being a university city, most people do.
Roden is small, not too much to do if you're young...but a gorgeous for biking or antiquing...cute little shopping area. But for excitment and nightlife...Groningen's for you!

I have been playing soccer in Zevenhuizen for the last 7 months which is just 4 or 5 km west of Roden. I drive to Zevenhuizen from Groningen twice a week. The adults in these satellite towns of Groningen generally do not speak English, and I generally sense that they are a bit annoyed when they have to speak slowly for me to understand, so it's good that you can understand Dutch. Almost all the young guys/girls on the soccer team can converse in English but there's always an exception somewhere! There are buses and they may well be excellent, but I have not met anyone who uses them. I always need to set aside a half hour to travel to and from Zevenhuizen (small windy roads after highway, traffic on the highway at times).
