National celebrations

Today is a remembrance day. Here in France we're off to remember the end of world war two.

It made me think about this topic. How many national celebrations and remembrance days is there in your country?

Which are their origins (end of a war, religious celebrations etc)?

Are you working during these days?

In Britain we have a day to remember the end of WW1 on the 11th of November. Usually the second Sunday in November is called Rememberance Sunday. When I was a child there was a minute's silence at 11am, I think. Now though, we seem to have 2 minute's silence for all sorts of things so I don't know what happens on Rememberance Sunday.

In Kuwait we have National Day and Liberation Day. They fall on the 25th and 26th of February. National Day is self-explanatory but I don't know its origins. Liberation Day commemorates the liberation of Kuwait in 1991 from the Iraqi invaders. Both are national holidays and if they fall on the weekend we are given the Saturday off as well (the weekend being Thursday and Friday).

Back in Angola, all the events are good to have a holiday, so we have holidays every month. But the most important are November 11th: Independence Day, February 4th: Beginning of the armed struggle of 1961 and April 4th, the end of the war in 2002...
But even for the president's birthday, there are 3-day celebrations, so...
