Australians in KL

Post new topic

Hi. If we have fellow Australians here then I would like to understand how best to package my salary to attain max Tax benefit.

I have a family with my wife, 4yr old, and a new on its way. I have an offer to relocate to KL on a min term of 2yrs but with likelihood of extension upto 6yrs in total.

Also, my work will be in PJ and therefore please suggest an area to live with not so mucvjb distance to Pj and also near good international schools.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks.

There is no real way to "package" salaries in Malaysia because all "extras" are taxable under Perequisites. This link shows the tax reliefs given on certain items - school fees are unfortunately not included and can be pretty high http://lampiran1.hasil.gov.my/pdf/pdfam/07_2017_2.pdf

A good aspect would be to pay the 11% deduction and 12% match by the employer into the EPF - but not all employers are open to this for foreign staff. If you can open an account for yourself, the interest has been about 6%.

Perhaps look at the Australian International School and live in the area favoured by Australians attending it, namely Gita Bayu http://www.gitabayu.com/#prettyPhoto/0/  This link shows other areas that are popular at the school https://www.aism.edu.my/admissions/school-bus-services School Fees: https://www.aism.edu.my/admissions/fees

The other choice is at Setia Alum - Peninsular School newly opened and could be more convenient. https://www.thestar.com.my/news/educati … -students/ School Fees http://www.peninsula.edu.my/school-fees/

Having a meeting with a tax adviser would probably be worth doing, especially if you want to get the best out of any payments into "Super" It may just be possible to get some tax relief.

I would just say don't be tempted to buy property as the minimum purchase price in Selangor is RM2million and there has just been announced a freeze on building any more "luxury" properties i.e. RM500k upwards, until the backlog of over 20,000 properties has been cleared - this could have a significant effect on house prices in about 6-9 months.
