Hello everyone, am new to the group, but living in KL for the last 3 yrs. my kids go to an international school. I have 3 children and affording education is becoming difficult year after year. The schools raise their school fees every year unjustifiably. Just wanted to confirm if Home schooling is possible. If yes what are the pros and cons from both present and future perspective. What does Home schooling really mean? Kids at home taking tuitions at home or they have to go to any academy? Do we need any permission to do so?

Looking forward to understand the dynamics.

Best regards,
Madiha

How is home schooling recognized in your home country? I['ve known some Americans that have done it, but there home schooling is pretty common. Most use a standard curriculum with regular textbooks, and for a set number of hours each day one of the parents plays teacher with the children. it is time consuming and the quality of the education is completely dependent on how seriously you as the parent take the role of teacher (which is different from parent).

There are lots of homeschool centres in Malaysia. It is quite a popular avenue and there are groups set up which meet regularly rather like day school with people who observe and guide studies. It depends where you live what is available nearby. The ones I know follow the IGCSE http://discover.edu.my/home/about-us/ It's not cheap but less expensive that some international schools.  But perhaps your first step is to try and find an affordable International school - there are some very reasonable ones around. Not sure what happens with immigration if you take kids out of school and whether home schooling means they return to dependent passes rather than student passes.

Hi Iskandarhack, thanks for your reply. I don’t think home schooling is popular in my country but it is an option a handful of parents adopt. My kids have never homeschooled so am clueless about the dynamics. Would definitely probe into it further. Once again thank you so much for your response, highly appreciate it.

Hi Gravitas,
Thanks for a detailed reply. My kids follow IGCSE syllabus so we are good there. I will check the link you’ve provided. My kids visa is dependent, not students visa. But yes need to check with the immigration dept before we reach any conclusion.

I live in Cheras, so I think I will google “homeschools nearby”, and will see what are the options available. My kids go to one of the middle tier schools, so it’s still affordable, but in future am not sure, the increase in school fees every year, while the Salaries remain constant :)

Anyways, will check your link and if there’s any further question, I will bug you again. Thank you

Hi Madiha,

May I know the school name and details, as my young one has to start the school this year.

Thank you in advance.

MadihaZee

Hi,
Which school details? Where my kids r currently studying?

Sapphireshine

Yes please, a guideline will help me to take a good decision.

MadihaZee

Hello, my kids r currently going to TAylors international school. It’s an average school. But still not a bad choice. Do pay them a visit before you finalise the school. Would help you.

Home schooling is one good option for expats and locals. I know of an experienced teacher for igcse subjects like Biology and English. You can contact him at ***.

Hi Mal72, I’m homeschooling my children at home too. I’m just starting out and would appreciate any helpful tips! I have two boys (8&12). We are currently in Phuket but plan to go to Penang late July. Do you, or anyone else reading this know of any meet up opportunities for homeschooled kids to socialise? Thanks.

Gravitas

Why not join FB group Expats in Penang. There are quite a few families that are homeschooling, both local and expat. Just a heads up - Penang immigration has become rather tricky.  There are of course Guardian visas.

Good thinking, thanks for replying  ;)

Thomas Edison was labeled “addled” by a school administrator, an event that led his mother to remove him from school and he was educated by his mother.

Homeschooling, meaning at your own home, has many-many advantages. Usually kids are progressing much faster, they are more happier and balanced. However, a parent needs to educate him(her)self on how to do this correctly. There is plenty of material about this on the web.
Regarding socializing with other kids, bring your kids to after-school activities. Developing social skills is very important.

A parent needs to adhere to a curriculum accepted in a country where your children are planning to take yearly tests  and graduate. I don't know how tests are done in Malaysia, but I am sure that you can check on this with the Ministry of Education here. Beside a standard curriculum, which gives a minimum for passing tests, children can certainly learn anything which interests them.

The Internet gives plenty of material for learning: your children can take lectures from the best teaches in the world, art classes, even dance classes. Use electronic text books, which are much cheaper than paper. They are also interactive, which gives them great advantage over paper books.

- Many people pay attention to FB selling users' private data. You are a product for them. Their AI builds profiles on every user. Do you really want your information you share to be used in the future against you?  Many users have been closed their accounts. Keep in mind that FB and Whatsapp, which belongs to FB, have huge issue with privacy. Millions accounts were hacked.
