Hello Expats,
I am a photographer, blogger and English tutor from the United States, During the process of applying for a residency permit in Uruguay, I had fingerprints taken at interpol for the background check required by immigration. When i asked for a second set of fingerprints for the purpose of receiving a copy of these records for personal uses, they refused because it is not an authorized practice. I know I am legally entitled to these records but law enforcement in the USA has to have fingerprints before they will send a copy of your records, Does anyone know where to have a set of fingerprints made for this purpose.
Thanks,
Robert
Hello, Julien!
I'm D, born and raised in New York. Seriously looking to expat for a better life. As expensive as everyone says Montevideo is, try living here! A burger is $14, a 2 br apartment is $2,700 and employers want to pay college graduates $12/hr for 39 hours of work a week so they can get out of having to give you benefits.
I'm hoping for a more genuine, human experience in Uruguay. Thank you for welcoming me into your community, I'm hoping to learn a lot from you guys.
Hi All
I am from Cape Town, South Africa.
I am currently studying my degree in accounting sciences part time and I work full time for a telecoms company as an office and accounts manager.
If anyone has any advice as to where I can apply for jobs in Uruguay and what the procedure is, please do let me know
I plan on completing my degree once I am over there.
Thanks in advance.
Hello from Sacramento!
I'm planning to teach English in Uruguay. I retired early from California where I taught high school and college English/Writing. I was also a reporter with KPFA News (Pacifica) and have been writing articles on the Hopi Indians for the international magazine Nexus.
I'd sure like to hear from some expats in Uruguay about the teaching situation. I formerly lived and taught in Taiwan, so living abroad isn't new for me. Consequently, I understand the inherent difficulties of living abroad.
Cheers! shawn
Hi Shawn,
My advice to you would be to Google a list of English language institutes in Uruguay and send your CV to them. It's possible to start working as an English teacher without residency, but you definitely want to find an institute that will help you with that process.
There's cash-in-hand work available too, but you definitely want that residency, which can be a long process.
Good luck!
Thank you! I appreciate your advice and will follow it!
Cheers!

DeanneV,
Your post neatly characterizes and reminds me why I want to move abroad! Cheers!

Hi Lise!!! How are you? These are some sites you can search for a job according to your abilities: https://web.zonamerica.com/https://www.aguadapark.com/empresas/http://www.wtcmontevideofreezone.com/op … es?lang=en
These 3 sites are free zones located in Montevideo where you can find a lot of different job proposals.
Take a look at them.
Greetings,
LUANA
Hi Luana,
What exactly is a "free zone"?
Cheers!

Hi Julien,
I started teaching in Taiwan so am familiar with the challenges of living abroad. I am also a reporter and writer, specialising in topics related to ancient anthropology. I have a four-part series in Australia's Nexus magazine involving the Hopi Indians . These are available for free at my web site, The Swill Bucket, if anyone is interested.
It's my interest in ancient history that draws me to South America, and while Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia are where the Hopi trace their origins, Uruguay seems to me a better place to live and teach. I'm hoping to find an English teaching position at a university. I would really appreciate any advice on the proper way to proceed.
Cheers!
Shawn Hamilton
Hi S E Hamilton. How are you?
There are 3 places in Montevideo where you can find different kind of business. Those business are international and all of them have the exemption from the payment of import duties for merchandise, as well as exemptions from some taxes or a different regulation of these. This latter, I explained, is exactly a free zone.
Greetings,
LUANA

I am Jose_u2 from USA and coming to Uruguay in Jan. 2018 for a couple of weeks to escape the cold weather up north. I also speak Spanish fluently and have lived and been a tourist in other countries, but I have never been in a country where its legal to have marijuana.
I would like to take advantage of that experience in Uruguay and make new friends, including Skype... Thanks in advance!

Hello all, I am planning to tentatively move to Uruguay in the fairly immediate future, though immediate term residency may be a very long term goal due to a high level of travel in 2 and 3-month cycles. I am here to calculate hidden costs in order to avoid unnecessary risk. For example, I am discovering that vehicular costs in Uruguay are quite exceptional and I need to see if the expenditure is worth the financial outlay.
