Steps to get a job and move to New Zealand

Post new topic

Nasreen19

Hi I'm a South African looking to get a job in New Zealand. I would appreciate any advice from people who have already made it there on how to go about it. Where do I even start? I have done the online assessment, and I know that I qualify for a visa but finding jobs is proving to be a slow process. Should I get the job first or the visa first? And which sites have jobs for expats? Many job ads I see say that you should already have a visa. Can anyone recommend recruiters that specialise in placing South Africans in New Zealand jobs?
Many thanks in advance :)

Priscilla

Hi Nasreen19,

I have created a new thread with your post on the New Zealand forum for more visibility and interaction with the members.

For some starting information, i invite you to have a look at the Living in New Zealand guide.

Thank you,

Immigration in NZ have a preferred skills list. If your skill set is in the building and construction fields then you should have a good chance of getting a job.

Hi Nasreen19

We have just come back to the UK after living in New Zealand for the past 3 and a half years. Firstly, you must have skills that NZ needs so check whether you qualify for a skilled visa or not. You say you are so that's a major hurdle crossed. I would also advice you to find a job first before you move there otherwise your savings will be used up very quickly! It is not the cheapest of destinations especially if you end up on a low income wage.  Be prepared to deal with A LOT of paperwork. Depending on what your industry is, sometimes it is best to apply directly to the companies.  This is what I did.  Nobody got back to me for months on end but I got a phone call a year later asking me for a Skype interview! Otherwise it is a great country and I loved it!

Good Luck!

Could you perhaps explain in few lines what would be the official process for issuing the work visa, assuming that a company in NZ made an offer?
