We need help with finding a congenial area in which to buy a property in Malta. We'd prefer not to be close to touristy but rather near undeveloped, country areas. Any suggestions??

Yud

Welcome on board biddy ;)

Hi biddy,

Welcome too.

Undeveloped, country areas? Maybe you should try a different island -))). Look around when you come in May, there are some quieter areas but reconsider buying property. The prices are way too high at the moment.

If you are considering coming to Malta under the Permanent Residence Scheme you don't have to buy , you can rent instead. But the scheme has been suspended since December 2010 and nobody know's if and when it will resume.

Ricky

For example, perhaps, Gozo?

I was actually thinking of Comino !

Sorry- just joking. But SA with its vast natural areas is somewhat different from the small island of Malta.

Even in the 'countryside' it is hard to find somewhere where you do not see or hear building or developing as the Maltese say. Even in Gozo.

But Gozo is certainly quieter and more relaxed than the main island.

Hi Biddy - as an ex S. African the question is - are you looking for a 'Karoo' style solitude or just away from high commuter areas? We have stayed in Malta many times and my intial comment would be that the traffic on the island is frenetic, other than on the northern side. Unfortunately you have to go into this frenetic part quite frequently in order to function - as in shopping and generally getting from one place to another - it's just part and parcel of the Malta experience. St Paul's Bay in the north is a quieter area with more of a SA residential feel about it (on a smaller scale.) The centre of the island is quite rural, but has its problems with very narrow roads and very old houses (as well as a fly problem if you are near to places keeping livestock!) However, Gozo island would probably be your answer, it's similar to the 'old' Eastern Transvaal and isolated from the mainland - access by ferry only. There are parts there too that are very busy, but has a really nice rural area away from Rabat. Hopefully you will spend at least 10 days on your fact finding trip - you will need it. :D

Thank you for your useful input - much appreciated. We are spending 3 weeks in Malta and will hopefully see all residential areas and types of accommodation available and will bear your advice in mind. This is a fact finding visit as what you read isn't always what you see.

By the way, is there a South African expat society in Malta?

rooikat

You are welcome Biddy. Yes, there is an expats' SA society run by Pam Chappel. Send me a p.message and I will let you have her email address. I've been told that quite a few SA's belong to a yachting club  near Valletta if that's one of your interests.

Hi, we are similar in our requirements to you.  If it wasn't for the kids we would probably be living somewhere half way up a mountain with a goat...

We are currently living in Attard which we have found to be quite nice.  It is not overly 'towny' like areas such as Sliema, Valletta but centrally located enough to make everywhere else easily accessible.  I would definitely put it on your list of areas to see and definitely find some time to visit San Anton Gardens while there, very tranquil and peaceful place to visit.

Hope that helps and please feel free to ask questions, my knowledge is somewhat limited but I'll help any way I can.

Good luck on your search.
