Hello, I am retiring (I live in the U.S.) and purchasing a house in Salem (small village) but from all I've read, it will take 6 months or so to go through the dreadful process of obtaining the non-lucrative visa.  Can anybody offer advice/personal stories of how this process played out for them? Lots of hoops to jump through! Thanks!!

usually it is not longer than 3 month

Thank you, that is very encouraging, and I hope you are right!

My mother-in-law just applied last week at the San Francisco consulate, and they told her she could expect an answer within 2 to 4 weeks.

When we applied two years ago in SFO, it took 5 or 6 weeks to get our answer.

It's really not that dreadful a process. It's actually relatively simple, IMO. The best advice I can give you is to get a book from Alan and Heidi Wagoner, they have a web site called Wagoners Abroad and sell an e-book that walks you through the whole process.
