Accomodation complications in Stuttgart

Post new topic

Jaewonkim

Hi I'm a university student in Korea and I was accepted for the winter semester exchange programme in SAdBK
For the accomodation, I signed up on studierendenwerk stuttgart. After I was given an offer from one of the dorm rooms of stuttgart, however, I didn't check the documents so I didn't pay the prrepayment before the deadline. I assume that they must have cancelled the offer.
So now I think I have two options. First, registering again at the studierendenwerk stuttgart, and second, finding a flat by myself.
For the first option, will it be available for me to get a room again before the semester starts at sep. 01?
and as for the second option, I heard that there are not many fully furnished rooms in stuttgart with affordable prices. Also, finding a reasonable accomodation would be risky and hard because I can't speak german and as I'm a foreigner.
I'm feeling desperate right now please give me some help:(

Hi Jaewonkim,

You are right to feel desperate, as Stuttgart is one of the most difficult cities in Germany to find a place to rent.
Since you are already coming in six weeks, insist on a furnished room, speak no German and plan to stay only for a few months, you have NO CHANCE AT ALL to find a regular rental place now.
I recommend you contact the Studierendenwerk, tell them whatever excuse you can come up with (NOT that you just forgot to pay, for which they won't be sympathetic!) and beg them to still honour the offer.
If that fails, look for a short-term serviced apartment. Those cost at least EUR30 per night (better budget EUR50 to get something more reasonable).
Good luck!

Thank you for the reply! I'm feeling more anxious as time goes by...
Is there really NO CHANCE at all to find a accomodation on my own...? In fact, I can change the date until october1 since winter semester starts then!
Also is there low possibility to get a new room if I register again at the studierendenwerk?
And lastly, does the dormitories around stuttgart-mitte have high accomodation requests???(such as heilmannstraße dormrooms which has over 200 rooms) will it be hopeless to dream of vacancies(lack of applicants)in such dormitories??

Of course you can always dream - and you should try any possibility you see.
But on the open rental market it is impossible to find anything without being physically here and meeting the landlord (and neither should you rent anything without seeing it, as there are many dumps and scams around).
Therefore your only real possibilities are student hostels or serviced apartments.
There are student hostel places for less than 10% of the students in Stuttgart, and demand is far higher. So you are lucky to get a place at all.

Thank you for the reply again..!
I realize that I was lucky to be offered a room after all....urgh.....I'll try my best as you told me to...thanks for all the advise!!

The reason why Beppi says one has no chance is that virtually nobody rents something out without first meeting the renter. The exceptions are things like hotels or renting vacation accommodation that can be done directly over the internet. You should really contact the Studierendenwerk and explain your situation and see if they can’t help. Otherwise you might have to look for a hostel or cheap hotel until you find something. Finding your own apartment is super difficult and if furnished SUPER expensive. If one is staying more than a semester, it is usually better to go to a cheap furniture place like IKEA and buy the furniture you really need and try to sell or just give it away when you leave.

The GOOD NEWS however is that many if not most students in German get rooms in shared apartments, often partially furnished. These are known as Wohngemeinschafts or WGs in German. There are usually multiple places at any University where advertisements are hung where people offer or ask for such accommodation – also to buy or sell their furniture. And since students finish their studies every year, there is a constant turnover and new chances each semester. One often has a relatively small room but common living room, kitchen, bathroom etc.  typically including things like TV and internet access. The factors in deciding for such a place are location and the flat mates. For most foreign students they have no advantage in being stuck in a suburb or city that is either far away or not well connected by public transportation. Being a foreigner is not such a big deal if the others in the apartment are similar age and/or studying similar subjects or have similar interests.

Stuttgart University has a main campus a bit south of the city. It also has a smaller central campus that I know well. If you are in Stuttgart and need some advice or to be shown the central campus, like where the accommodation ads are at, I can show you. You can best arrange that by sending me a direct message over this site.
