Hi!

Among the 12 parishes in the municipality of Caldas da Rainha, which do you think are the best and safest to live in for a solo female retiree? I am a minimalist and would want my life to be simple, yet comfortable. With that said, I won't have a car and would be relying mainly on public transportation to do my errands. I enjoy hiking so it would be bonus if the neighborhood would have a bank, a grocery store, pharmacy, etc. within a walking distance as well.

If you don't want to have a car then I guess it would be great to live in Caldas da Rainha town itself. Walking distance from the park and the market and the bus/train station. Overall I think that Portugal is very much a car country and having a car there is really a lot to explore. I wouldn't want to live in Portugal (I am close to Torres Vedras) without my own transport.

Yes, Torres Vedras is in Portugal. Without a car it's not very comfortable to live in Portugal. Caldas da Rainha town would be a good option for you, Maria.

Also Lissabon, here is a very gut infrastructure, Bus, Tram, Subway! Don't need car.

Congrats. We just bought in Carvoeiro. So exciting isn’t it?

I have lived in Belgium and found it easy to live without a vehicle, since trains went everywhere. But Portugal isn’t anywhere near as accessible by public transport as Belgium.

If you live in Caldas da Rainha it's easy to go places on pubic transport though you'll not be able to go everywhere and some methods are slow. You can also hire a car if you need to visit the middle of nowhere (aka central Portugal) so no worries. You can even pop over to Silver Coast beaches by local train or, it's mainly non-hilly, by bike. Here's StreetView on the train from Caldas to some beaches.

That's why most Portuguese have a car. I wouldn't want to live in Portugal without one.

Can anyone tell me a little about the santa barbara area near Lourinha please.

Hi, I live in Santa Barbara (Marquiteira), very quiet but nothing to do. There is 1 restaurant barracao do petisco. There are a few more in porto dineiro (4 km) . The nearest beaches are Peralta (5km) or Valmitao (3 km).  In Lourinha there are 3 supermarkets (pingo doce, intermarche and lidle).  There is a small supermarket in ventosa or you can go to the village market in Ribamar.

Thanks, but I'm already resident here in Portugal,  just looking to move area for our retirement. We're currently in the Alentejo where we've been working having started off in the Algarve and now planning to move up to the Silver Coast.

looking forward to catching up, whenever we move down to our home in St Barbara !!

I'm looking to purchase planning to visit Nov yo look.  What would be good area for public transport, walking distance to necessities.  Beach not too far.  Single, retired female.  I hope to volunteer.  Eventually get a vehicle.

@ljwaks  Greetings! I have a few questions if you dont mind. Would you say that walking is pretty level or having inclines? Are most services ie banks and grocery stores in close proximity? And lastly hows the climate? Thank you for reading this .Best wishes.

@lcosta72 Greetings! Could you please tell me if Caldas is an easily walkable city? I prefer level walking as opposed to steep inclines. I've recently learned my ancestors once lived in Portugal therefore I would love to learn of its culture. Access to public services such as transportation ,banks. and markets and medical facilities in close proximity are what I am looking for. I'm not keen on big cities anymore as I desire a more relaxed way of life. Thank you for your time.

@SmithIslandgal Do you use modern technology like Google and Google Maps. Very convenient in finding out about what a place has to offer. And with the SAT feature one can even see some of the topology. I find the information usually very up to date.
