Party time ... or maybe not

Saudi has laws many expats find hard to understand and can lead to a lot of very serious problems.
This BBC story is worth a read.
The rights and wrongs are unimportant, but the message to tread carefully matters.

Seventeen Filipina workers in Saudi Arabia have been detained after they took part in a Halloween party, the Philippines foreign ministry says.

The women were taken into custody on Friday by intelligence officers who raided a compound in Riyadh, after neighbours complained about the noise.

It is not yet clear what charges they are facing.

But the foreign ministry noted that Saudi laws prohibit unattached men and women being seen together in public.

Indeed.  What most people assume is that compounds are "safe".  Not all compounds are the same.   And even in the "safe" ones, if there is a complaint, the authorities can get a warrant and enter - granted that for the bigger western ones they do not bother generally, especially since the warrants to get into those "influential" compounds take a while to come through.

And themed parties and / or gatherings are tricky as you can be labelled as holding "unsanctioned" events - permission is needed to literally do anything at a larger scale here.
