Medical cover after brexit

There has been a story doing the rounds over the past couple of days that U.K. nationals’ medical cover, provided by DWP on the S1 system, might be discontinued.

It would seem the story was based on cover provided by the EHIC ,  that is cover for tourist, and not on the cover provided by form S1

In spain,  if the DWP were to stop the cover which they provide by the S1, it would be replaced by spain who now provide full medical cover for everyone living in spain.  Thus those who reside here would get free cover.

New settlers might need Private cover until they are classified as ‘living in spain.’

The exact details covering that are a little hazy in that people applying for EU Citizen Registration are not being allowed to use that ‘free cover for all’ to satisfy the medical cover requirement for EU Citizen Registration.  However,  Once registered they should be able to get such cover as they would be ‘living in spain.’

Fingers crossed. We have just taken up residency and it's costing a lot of money for private health insurance which doesn't cover any pre-existing conditions.

Steven.    Your post is a little confusing

One must have full medical cover, without even any co payments, and certainly not with any exclusions (pre-existing conditions)  to apply for EU Citizen Registration.

You say you have taken up residency  .

Do you mean you have registered and have your green paper certificate,  or that you are just living here, in effect, illegally, under the radar  ?

John have you read this > https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jan/29/british-pensioners-in-eu-will-lose-nhs-covered-health-care-under-no-deal-brexit

Sim city. That was the story I was referring to

This was the part which was wrong, in that it refers only to EHIC and not S1 cover

“Currently pensioners can get treatment reimbursed by the NHS under an EU-wide set of reciprocal arrangements”

The DWP pay 4,700 euros per year to spain for all those, over 65,  and 800 euros for dependants aged 18 to 65, , covered by the S 1,  regardless of how much or little use they make of the health cover.

EHIC treatment, for all, not just pensioners, is billed back to the country where the EHIC was issued so ‘reimbursed’.

However,  as I said, either way we in
Spain will be OK.  Those in other EU countries might have problems

We have residency and we are paying €85 a month for health insurance which doesn't cover pre-existing.

Still not sure Steven what you mean by ‘residency’

There is EU registration for EU citizens and RESIDENCIA for non EU citizens

Nevertheless,  someone made an error in your case.

I work at a national police station and regularly people who do not have 100%  insurance are not permitted to register.

The law states that very clearly and applies to EU and non EU nationals.

For the benefit of others,  be aware of that requirement,  and do not bank on others getting it wrong

I have finally been granted my Certificate of Residency , the little green card ( also incorrectly called Residencia) l just want to give others the heads up on the medical insurance requirement here in Gran Canaria, it might not apply in Mainland Spain but the beaurocracy here will only allow the application to be completed if you have proof of medical insurance that runs from January to December and has to be paid all up front on Jan 1st , no monthly payments are allowed and no policy excess payments either, I am annoyed that I took out cover from Sept 2018 but the 4months up to 31stDec were not taken into account.
That aside I was informed that the cover HAD to start from 1st Jan for the year , and if it was taken out after January because it wouldn’t be for 12months it was unlikely that I would be granted the Certificate, also the invoice from my medical company had to be backed up by the bank statement from where it was paid from !
It has been a totally frustrating situation that I feel will only become more complicated after March .
I have heard of many people that have moved here and have lived happily under the radar so to speak because they have only rented a property and haven’t bought a vehicle and more importantly haven’t required any medical treatment, I’ve wanted to do everything legal and have finally got there ,but it’s been a long hard struggle, good luck to anyone trying to move here !
