Good day everyone,

My name is Desmund, currently based in South Africa, hoping to relocate to Malta.

I have more than 3 years' previous experience within the online gaming industry. Started out as a junior customer service agent, worked myself up to a Team Leader. I have also worked as an assistant to the affiliate manager and have worked as a VIP host.

My experience comes from two different Microgaming online casino groups, as well as one RTG (Real Time Gaming) casino group. I have thoroughly enjoyed working in this kind of environment, in fact I thrived in this kind of environment.

The only reason I am not working within the online gaming industry anymore, is due to the fact that the last two casino groups have sadly closed down, one having merged with another casino group which is based in Gibraltar. I certainly would not mind getting back into the gaming industry at all. Shortly after I left the gaming industry I worked for an online trading company which was fun but not as fun as working for an online casino.

From my knowledge majority of the online casinos have their licenses in Malta. So why not relocate to Malta and work on an island where it is the home of most online gaming companies.

I have extensive customer service experience within various types of fields including the IT industry, as such I have enrolled myself into an online IT course to up skill myself in order to be able to provide technical service as well where need be.

Hi
Derby born and bred
Chartered Accountant.
Been holidaying in Gozo since my mother first took me in about 1980 (old Cornocopia)
Myself and wifey starting to plan our early retirement and Gozo is Plan A
Initial thoughts are an initial 12 month rental while we make sure we can settle away from the UK, and then make the move.
We’d drive down with essentials (including the cats) and would look to volunteer with the Gozo SPCA.
Over the last few years holidays we have enjoyed feeding the various feral cats we encounter, including daily visits to the park in Victoria.
We would like eventually to foster and assist with rehoming strays.
I will be particularly interested in reading experiences about visas, residency and car registration.
Happy to be here :)

GozoMo

Welcome to the Forum, at the moment as you are still in the EU you do not need a visa but they may change after Brexit.

ChiefChilliFryMaker

Fingers crossed it stays that way eh.
:)

Welcome to the forum. As soon as you apply for residence you have to reregister your car. In case you want to keep the status of a tourist you can do so up to seven months. After that it is compulsory to get Maltese numberplates, unless you decide to leave the country with your car and come back again. However, if you drive with foreign number plates it is always good to keep a copy of your last ferry ticket with you in order to prove when you arrived in Malta.

You do not apply for citizenship, you apply for a residence permit to live here.

Post Brexit you'll find this quite difficult - or a lot more difficult as you'll be classed as a non EU third country national.

If possible, move before the 29th.

Ocdstigy

Thanks for the reply! I wish i could but finances wont allow :(

Ocdstigy wrote:

without a brexit deal allowing some form of free/easy movement and unless you are married to a EU citizen, you'll not be able to move here without a future employer sponsoring you for a work permit.  Something that's quite difficult.

Ocdstigy

Is this 100% because somebody has told me nothing will change regarding moving to malta,im being told various opinions, not that i doubt what your telling me but do you know what government official in the uk or malta i can speak to about this, as i really need a definitive answer. If i cant move its a game changer for my whole plan :(

I doubt if anyone can give you a definite answer until Brexit actually takes place, knowing Brexit was going to happen perhaps you should have moved here earlier, if you have a job lined up you may be ok, good luck.

If there is no deal it’s as I said https://www.gov.mt/en/Pages/brexitfactsheet.aspx

If there is a deal you have a transition period after which who knows.

But what happens after no deal Brexit is known and written above.

volcane

And with the currently agree deal (that the uk gov have not signed off on) things are also quite clear already https://www.gov.uk/guidance/living-in-malta

There is no indication anywhere that things will stay as they are. Eventually you might get a easier path but without a deal you will be same as any third country national. With a deal you have more options and a 2 year transition.

SimCityAT

Things change daily and I can't say if it's good or bad. Does anyone know?? Move before the 29th March if can't as you have said. pray for non - Brexit!!

Ocdstigy

Thanks for the informative replies! Going to start browsing for jobs in malta this week, can anybody recommend me any websites to look on? Iam currently in the Automotive trade but iam open to moving onto a different career, regards.

GozoMo

You have more chance of finding work by being here in person, many companies do not reply to emails.

hanselmar

Malta is a catholic country. If you are befriendet with a maltese catholic priest that will help you a lot to get acquainted with the local business community. In this country it is still important to know people in person. An email means nothing for many people over here. Often it has the same status than Nigerian scam.

I am currently living in the heart of Europe and thinking about picking a country for early retirement where it is nicely warm and not too deer.

I know Malta from a previous holiday.

I am going to research cost of living, every day issues, transportation, health system, internet reliability.

And activities or employment opportunities for bored people

matjung

My first impression is already that on this website landlords are looking for high spending tenants

JungleJack

Hi All,

We’re a family of 4 (2 young children), moving to Malta on May 12th all the way from the jungles of Northern Thailand (EU Citizens). Despite loving it here in Thailand, it is after more than a decade here, finally, time to move on for the sake of our kids. We’re really looking forward to living in Europe again, and Malta seems like either a good stepping stone (quite literally I guess) to other places or a long term new home (only time will tell). We’ve never even visited Malta before so the whole move is a huge gamble and to be honest we’re all quite terrified,  :o  naturally. The only exception being our son, who is already learning Maltese on his own accord. He also can’t wait to live in a cooler climate   … and I must say, I think we’re all in agreement on this point.

I myself and our son, love football and we hope to be able to continue our hobby in Malta and to make new friends.

I hope to be able to contribute to the forum in the future and to help other newbies, once we’ve been able to settle down and actually have something to contribute.

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum :)

Do you have a job to go to? If you don't it's a very risky business to go to a new place without ever visiting it first. Even more so when you have a young family with you. I would recommend visiting the country first before you make any firm plans.

JungleJack

Hi and Thanks for your reply! - I appreciate it.
Yes, I already have a job. I work remotely in the IT sector. This means that we can fairly easily pack-up and go elsewhere, or e.g. return to Thailand if things don't work-out. But, yes, nonetheless it's a huge risk I acknowledge that, and thus the anxiety about it all. On the other hand, I can't imagine Malta being more difficult to live in compared to rural Thailand, especially with the current political climate here.

wish us luck  :)  ... we're going to need it.

GozoMo

If you want nice green open spaces forget Malta, majority of the island is heavily built up.  Gozo the smaller of the two islands has more open space although there’s a lot of building work going on, it’s much quieter and cheaper to rent then Malta.
With regards learning maltese, which is a difficult language to learn, most of the school lessons are taught in english.
Good luck, a holiday first would be recommended.

also a remote IT worker, we're very happy here - but travel a lot due to cabin fewer.

Thanks GozoMo!  :) Yes, we are definitely looking into/at Gozo, and also at Mellieha and St.Paul's Bay. Essentially anywhere but the crowded central regions. The only concern we have with regard to these areas is schooling for our kids (i.e. the language barrier) and football clubs for me and my son. Otherwise, we are pretty flexible and used to "challenging" living conditions. And yes, I agree a holiday there would be ideal first (the same thing would apply here as well), but it's just an awfully long way from here to there, just for a holiday - so we're just going to have to plow through. We're sure to make many mistakes along the way, but there really is no better way to learn, is there. - thanks -  :top:
