Hey everyone,

Pets are an integral part of a lot of families. So much so that they would never consider moving abroad without them. Before doing so, it would be important to know the pet culture in Bulgaria just to make sure that their little “expets” feel welcomed in their new homes. Would you give our expats-to-be an insight of what it is like to have a pet in Bulgaria by answering the following questions?

What part do pets play in society in Bulgaria? Are they generally accepted in rentals and public spaces more generally?

Is it common for families to have pets?

What animal is the most often kept as pets? Are there some animals that cannot be kept as pets? Do some animals have specific significations when kept as pets?

How about the infrastructure needed to cater for pets? Can you find everything you need for your pet in terms of pet food, veterinary services, accessories, pet grooming etc...?

Do people generally spend a lot of money on their pets?

Please share your experience,

Priscilla

Hello, our dog Lezzi, a Golden retriever- german shepherd mix, died close to one year ago. But during the time she lived here with us, she was welcome in the Pubs, and well known in the village we live in.
Unfortunately, most of the Yard Dogs in villages are chained, and hardly ever being loosened and walked by the owners. Some of the gypsies have Dogs, but they do not really care about them. Worst there are the brats, which treat Dogs sometimes downright cruel.
In the villages, there are always a number of strays, which are Walking around to find food. They are quite grateful if one leaves meal leftovers, bones and scrubs on places they are commonly seen.
On the sunny side, there are pet Shops and pet food well available, even if one want to cook fresh dog food, there is raw material like pork liver or kidneys, chicken almost everywhere available at a good Price.
The veterinaries are well trained, and the Thrakian University in Stara Zagora, Veterinary branch, has an excellent Reputation. The costs for normal Treatments like de-worming, or Spot- ons are well within the Limits.
There are even dedicated dog groomers available, where one can leave his pet for a couple of hours so the dog is bathed, the fur cut, and so on.
