Hi there,
I lived in Edinburgh for 5 years... cheapest option to live is probably around the Leith area which is very close to city central. The transport is pretty good too. My rent was always about £260 - £300 per month. It's quite expensive but if you shop around you'll find a good deal. Montogomery Street/Easter Road is a nice area and pretty cheap.
