morality/ record/ applying to remain as a spouse of mauritian citizen

Hi all,

I am in the process of getting all my documents and effects together to join my spouse.
I resigned from my work place in February and have paid and closed off my financial liabilities.
I am currently living on savings. I did these to prepare myself to join my spouse permanently.
I am from the UK and my query is related to applying to remain permanently with my spouse.

I have a historic criminal record which is considered as "spent" in the UK. It has been dealt with the courts and was settled by payment of a fine. It did not occur a custodial sentence.
Question being will this record mean an application to remain in mauritius is rejected by the PIO?
It is difficult to find clear information regarding this, or will each application be looked at individually.
I understand that morality certificate is required so does this weigh on a historic record?
If someone can shed some knowledge in this so I can approach the pending application confidently.

Hi,

It all depends on the nature of the criminal record. I don't know what 'spent' means in UK judicial jargon but does it still appear on your certificate of character? If it doesn't, then you have nothing to worry.

If it does, then different types of misdemeanor and felonies are treated differently depending on their severity and the extent to which your coming to settle in Mauritius can impact society directly or indirectly, irrespective of whether it was settled as a fine or a incarceration.

You will need professional legal advice on this. You can either do this in UK itself or try to get in contact with a Mauritian lawyer to clear things up.
