New Guy on the Block, Again.

I retired about 6 years ago and my wife and I have been traveling almost ever since . The have been to some really exciting countries and met some really interesting people. We were in Cuenca about 4 years ago and loved it .We now have plans to be there near the river in the months starting December 27th for 3 months. Maybe even move there some day ?
I am a walker and trying my best to live without a car . When we were in Cuenca we would start by walking by the river stopping along the way to admire the beautiful scenery. At some point we would turn and walk up some very tall steps . Worked our way over to "Monday Blue" to have a well earned "Minta Nevada". It is one of my favorite rum drinks. And then work our way back through the park and past till we got to the ice cream shop . We would have a cone dipped in real local chocolate and sit while watching the locals and tourists walk down the street. There was always something to do but sometimes the simple things can be the most fum. It has been a while so I have forgotten a lot of street and building names.
We are really looking forward to coming back again and hopefully meeting some other travelers and expats.

You should check out Quito. I have been here three years now and love it. You also do not need a driver's license to navigate this city. However, Espanol will be very helpful here as fewer people speak English than in Cuenca. Also you should know it is at 14,000 feet elevation and some people can not handle the altitude.

Quito is actually listed at 9350 feet in altitude, and depending on exactly where you are in the city it can be several hundred feet higher or lower. I lived there for several years as a young boy. 14,000 feet puts you most of the way up to the top of Guagua Pichincha which is 15,696 feet altitude.

Thanks for the correction. Learning Espanol and metrics some times causes confusion with my numbers. Bottom line - the elevation is an issue for some people.
