Hi all. Just wondering if some one can shed some light. I have secured  teaching post in a British school. Will be moving to Muscat from UK with wife and 2 kids. Can some one tell me if my partner will be able to secure a job though she does not have a degree, her highest qualification is level 3 Btec. She has been working in a  school in UK as a Attendance Administrator & Child Protection Officer for 7 years, is also CELTA qualified and taught English to adults previously. I was wondering with that level of skill and qualification how likely is she able to secure a job in Muscat preferably in the education sector. We are looking to top up our overall income as we need to contribute for 2nd child schooling fee of 180 omr montly.
Is 1200 omr monthly income after rental allowance sufficient, considering  paying 180 omr for tuition and other living cost for a family of 4. We are moderate spenders, dine out occasionally (3/4 times a month) 1 holiday a year and other usual expenses e.g clothing, food etc.
So in summary is 1020 omr sufficient for a family of 4?
Will I be able to save any income on average?
How likely is my wife able to secure a post?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Dear Riaz,

I am not sure about your nationality. I assumed you are UK national. Based on this, Please find my answer

So in summary is 1020 omr sufficient for a family of 4?
Food and other expenses, it would be sufficient.

Will I be able to save any income on average?
You are not mentioned you total income and housing allowances.  If I come to know then I can tell how much you can save in average.  is 1200 OMR is your total gross income (excluding house allowances).  If yes, then I can suggest you more specific for living  expenses etc

How likely is my wife able to secure a post?
Getting a job for a expatriate female in Muscat is very difficult (dont feel bad, this is reality).  But I noticed there are several ongoing vacancies available in American school in Muscat based your spouse credentials.

Also please find my additional details.

I come across to know the rental details

For non American-European expatriate the rent would be OMR 230 to 350 OMR (230 OMR apartment means comfortable and it increased with more facilities).

People from western countries and company sponsored accommodation people staying costs around 450 OMR to 550 OMR  where you can see the European and Americans.

You should have a vehicle otherwise will be very challenging .  If you dont have a vehicle then have to take apartment near hyper markets.

As per my 4 months stay in Muscat, the countries is very costly if we need to save money.  I am sacrificing lot of additional luxuries for saving money.

Dining outside is very costly (my view according to Indian mindset) according to me.  You have to reduce once in a month in-order to save money.

Do let me know, if you need more information for anything for settling/living at Muscat.

Thanks for you prompt reply Aasishv. I am travelling from UK and a am a British national. I can tell you the company is paying extra 450omr for housing on top of the 1200omr. But I have to contribute 180omr for schooling fees.  What are your thoughts in terms of savings.

Does my wife have to change her Visa status to look for job or can that be done once a job has been secured?

Can you put me in touch with job agencies who might be able to recruit her a suitable job before we arrive?

Thank you so much for your help.

Dear Sir,

. So your mentioned remuneration is good for a good living style.  So my suggestion is

a) Find a place for stay around the monthly rent of 370 OMR.  Good apartments are available if you drive from your school in 10 to 15 minutes.

b) I feel near your school also there are apartment in lesser cost.  I am nearby your school.  Explore and fix.

c) Initial settling cost needs to be beared for furnishing etc.  You can buy second hand furniture for reducing the cost.  There are several facebook groups like for the same.

d) Since I am staying alone here and I am not exactly calculated the monthly expenses.  Before I come Muscat I asked to my Indian friend and he said that the monthly food cost (Prepare at home) would be 100 OMR for a couple (max). He added include 50 for each head.  That means if we prepare food at home then each head would of 50 OMR. This is Indian standard living..... for Europeans add 20% more of this.

The cost would be 370 OMR (For 2 BHK with include Wifi, Electricity and water) + 200 for Food Expenses (4 members of ur family) + 90 OMR for travel cost + 200 for School fees.

Rest all are savings.

As per rule your wife have to change the visa status.  I have little knowledge of people who are working with out changing the visa status. For long term position the visa status needs to be changed since you are European national.  Unlike Indians, American and Europeans wont break rules.

Dont be consider wife can get job immediately here.  Even I come here the same and thought that wife can get job here.  But reality is to get a visa for a female is very difficult.

There are several job portal that you get in the google and vacancies are available in the local news papers.  So I am not giving you specific job portal for search. I had found several potion open in American school at Muscat at the time for searching a job  for my wife).

Please feel free to get in touch if you need any further information and support.

Regards,

AVS
