Sense of humour in Costa Rica

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everyone,

Should we set out to explore Costa Rican’s culture through its sense of humour? Indeed, if one is planning to settle in the country, it is best to understand the cultural codes governing humour in order to avoid any faux-pas.

What is special about the sense of humour in Costa Rica?

Is it acceptable to joke about any situations?

What is typically funny and what is absolutely not funny?

Are there any popular comedians in Costa Rica and how would one be able to discover them (stand-up shows, festivals, internet, etc.)?

What is the funniest joke you have heard in Costa Rica?

Please share your experience,

Bhavna

Costa Ricans have very healthy humor. They are definitely NOT used to dark humor. I'm Dutch and my inlaws do not appreciate the typical dark humor we have, they just don't understand it.

Costa Ricans love memes. They pull out new memes on everything that happens here, good or bad. They will make a meme on every decision the government takes and they'll make them about governmental strikes. They'll make them on the holes in the pavement and about the actualities and decisions made by the president of the country.

Stand-up comedies were unknown until a few years ago. But there is a Stand-Up Comedy Festival in September every year. You'll be able to find stand-up comedy events online in places like Jazz Cafe.

Norval Calvo started a career in humor in the 1970s in La Dulce Vida and maintains a well-known radio program "Pelando el Ojo". Norval, with Channel 6, is producing La Dulce Vida again on TV and is quite successful. Also during the  Xmas holidays, Channel 7 created El Chinamo many years ago.

Costa Rica has a large group of humorists and comedians - Gorgojo, Coco, Porcionzón, Opo Marin, Marcia Saboria, Maria Torres, La media Docena etc.

I found that you can say Pura Vida and it mean “peace and love” or “go to hell” depending on your tone!  Spend time with locals!  Don’t make those mistakes😂😂💜

My best friend Diego has a great sense of humor.
I can't say as I notice that much difference between his humor and mine or other Gringos.
There may well be differences but I don't notice them, or at least can't think of any now.
