Hi this is Nehar from Bangalore in India, looking to relocate to Kuala Lumpur in July. Would require some help in understanding the lifestyle in Malaysia. I am coming there on a work visa with a salary of 2000 ringget. I would like to know if this is sufficient to live a life alone there and how do the expenses work. Help me understand the expenses for an individual.

Hi Nehar, 2000 MR is okay for you as long as you are shrewd in your spending. If you use it well, you will always have some net income to save. There are people here whose salaries are not up to your salary, yet they are comfortably okay. Things are relatively affordable here. There is no restriction in any kind of life style. You will, I trust, enjoy your stay in KL. You are, in advance, cordially welcome to Malaysia. Safe journey as you come

nehar

I feel a very warm welcome to KL already. Thanks Okwudili

Hi Nehar.. Welcome to KL. If u re alone n travelling by bus or LRT. 2000is ok for 1 person. U can stay as a paying guest or share a condo with few friends. Food here is very cheap in few restoran( they call mama's shop)for this. cost of living depends on individual who wants to b luxurious. Even the beauty saloons & shoppiong is cheaper compared to B'lore

nehar

Thanks Shilp :)

Nehar,

Congrats on the job but i beg to differ. Anything less that 5k is probably not worth going for. I have been here for a couple of month and even though you can get by on a lesser salary- it wont be easy.

Hope this helps

Hi Nehar.
Congrats on the new job. I think you will be okay on RM2000 a month, as long as you don't live it up too much. Local food is cheap and also very good. I believe the average income of a family of 4 in Malaysia is RM3000, so you should be fine. Check out my blog and maybe it will be of some help to you.

Dear Hinglish,

Thanks for your update but i will also be making incentives every month which would be close or equal to my salary. i just did not mention that as i wanted to keep that as a personal expenditure apart from my basics.
Appreciate your help.

Nehar

Will check the same Steve. Thanks

Expatypus

Most expats need a 5K salary to get a work visa.
Only exceptions are for low paid jobs that locals don't want.

It sounds fishy.

nehar

Hi Expatypus,

I am already working with the same compnay here in India and internally moving to Kl but working with the same company and we have just started our new office in KL and will expand soon.

Bates

Hello Nehar,

Welcome to Malaysia. You can if you want to live on RM 2000. Get a room in Brickfields in Kuala Lumpur - that's where many IT expats live and the rent is mid range. Suggest you try Scott Sentral Condo or Sri Impian Condo for rooms. The LRT and the main KL Sentral are all within walking distance. Food is good and average priced. Good Luck

nehar

Thanks Bates. Thats great advice. Will check the same.

Bates

Your welcome.

Scott Sentral is actually quite expensive...neighbouring villa scott is cheaper, and palm court even more cheap...sri impian quite cheap also

Hi for an expat work permit your salary should be 5,000 rm a month which is why I guess thy upped it. Be careful of averages. The average salary in the uk is 26,000 pounds a year. In London that means living on the breadline! Same in Malaysia. Average salaries in kl are far higher than the rest of Malaysia to reflect the significantly higher living costs. On 5k though a sensible person with a non expat lifestyle can live ok depending on travel etc. I know locals live on less but 3k in a kampung is a good living. Also averages include east malaysia where poverty is more widespread. A Malay teacher on 2.5k a month gets cheap house and car loans and a good pension etc. Police get 1.5k a month but get housing and "cash bonuses" lol. So comparisons are difficult.....

Congrats on your job and enjoy kl!

+1 to Nemodot...
few weeks ago i read a study in the NST about household's average salary in Malaysia...as far as I remember, it was around 7K in Selangor, 6K in KL, and the less was for Kelantan, not sure but around 2K i think...and dont remember if they included Sabah/Sarawak.

and i remember the shock i had when after having great nasi goreng ayam with telur goreng during a bus stop somewhere in the kampung far from KL, the lady asked me for 2.50 RM......"are u sure?? is it only for the fried egg??"  (3 times less than KL!)

ashabmy

Well... cost of living in KL is a lot higher if you compare with "kampung" (countryside). Price/meal minimum RM7.00, which is a local standard meal. A government servant with RM1,500/month can still live comfortably in country side, house provided by government, but they will struggle to live in KL with that salary.

As for Nehar's case, I would say.. it would be a very tight budget. Take bus or light train and having meal in "local" restaurant would help. Mind you, there are plenty of indian restaurants in KL, so I would assume she will not have problem with "local" indian restaurant.

There is also several indian restaurants at StanChart building area (one of them is just next to the rear entrance). My office is also in StanChart building, had breakfast at indian restaurant & lunch/dinner at Pavilion.

Hi Nehar,

I agree with Ashabmy. It would be very tight budget for you. It also depends on your lifestyle in Bengaluru. If you are staying very comfortably there, if you visit fine dine restaurants, buy branded clothes there it would be difficult to do it in KL on youe budget. But if you are ok with the local food available in Mamak restaurants you wont feel any difference. However you'll feel much better here as compared to India trains and buses are not that crowded :-)
