Moving to Jubail

Post new topic

ShipFixer

Hi all, I'm new here and the military is moving me to Jubail at the end of this month on one-year orders.  I know it's been asked repeatedly, but what will the compound life be like there?  My parents live in the Aramco compound in Khobar so I expect I'll be there quite a bit.

I get the rules on life outside the walls (and by nature I am not a rule breaker).  What about inside?  Is, uh, talking to women verboten there too?  I hear alternative opinions from people including my parents that it's either a social black hole or there are plenty of people to meet inside the camps.  Not that dating or not dating will determine how happy I am to be there, just curious about that aspect.

Also, I'm really into cycling and hoping to keep my speed up while I'm there so I can race when I get back to the states.  I've found some info on cycling clubs in Riyadh, Jubail and Khobar and will be shipping the road bike over once I'm done with it here.  Hoping that this will be a year to concentrate on overall fitness in the gym and on the bike...anyone know if that's a reasonable expectation?

Oh....by cycling I mean on a race bike, riding like I'm being chased by space aliens, not just pedaling around :-)  I have seen photos on Facebook of a Filipino club wearing spandex on nice bikes so I'm assuming it can be done.

One last question.  McDonals's?  Chili's?  Anything of the sort?  Fully intend to get into local food, but I like what I'm used to as well...

Welcome to the forum. and to Jubail..
a lot of Qs but a lot of very helpful ppl here too to help you out..

So lets take it from the top:
1. Compound life will be just like the life of your parents in the Aramco housing. There are some areas where the rules are a bit more softer, like no need for the black robe for the women, etc. but otherwise the general rules of Saudi Arabia apply.
2. Dating scene, well more or less that is a no no, but I am sure that within the compounds themselves, its a bit more easier. Outside, well things are different, a very conservative country.
3. Cycling is not an issue at all. the climate is not exactly helpful, heat, sand storms, and then the chilling cold, so when you do find the time please indulge yourself by all means. :) but then advice would be to avoid the highways since Saudi Arabian driving styles are not exactly safe for the people on the shoulder.
4. Nearly all the big fast food chains have there franchisees here. Check out the Khobar forum, there is a post dedicated to places you can eat here.

Anything else? ask.

Cheers!

Dear Bro,

Life inside a compound is just as normal as living in any small city of a small state in U.S. Yes you can approach a girl and talk to her. Entire environment and culture is a bit too reserved. Once you get to know people then it's all good. You'd start to have more fun in middleeast then anywhere else in the world.

For life outside of Compound, Just imagine that you are in year 1750 A.D. lol

Thanks guys!  My mom seems to think I can't go biking outside the compounds in normal cycling attire (lycra shorts, short sleeve jersey, etc.).  But I've found pictures of cycling clubs in Jubail and Riyadh that are wearing what I'd wear over here, and don't appear to be inside the compounds.  Have you seen cyclists running around in bike shorts, or should I try to find the lightest, coolest full length tights I can?

I have heard that Saudi drivers are pretty sketchy, so I'm assuming rides outside the compounds are going to be limited anyway...

no problems with the atire much, just dont let it be bit too skimpy. :) and cycling is not goign to be problem outside and all. dont worry about that. :D

cheers!
